The Plantes Ferry Soccer Complex in Spokane will be busy this weekend as 82 teams from the greater-Spokane area and a few visitors come together for the River City Cup, hosted by FC Spokane, which will have 24 teams in action.
The event, which raises money for cancer research through Coaches vs Cancer, will feature boys and girls brackets for each age from U11-14 with a pair of mixed older brackets, U15/16 and U17-19, at the upper end of the spectrum.
The list of clubs from the area is vast with eight representing Spokane Foxes/Pumas and five each from the Sabers, Breakers, Cheney Storm and XiFA. Spokane Valley FC United will have four teams along with the Scotties. Washington East is fielding three teams.
A number of clubs are coming into town from around the Northwest. Leading the visitors is Lethbridge FC with four teams playing in three boys brackets and one girls. Also crossing the border from Canada is the U12 boys from Kootenay South.
The Idaho Thunder, which have a U17 boys team playing for a USCS national championship this weekend in Chicago, have three teams in town for the event. Other visitors include Maple Valley SA, Lakeland SC Nighthawks, Snohomish YSC United, Sun City Strikers, PacNW and the duo of Rainier Valley Slammers and Synergy from the Auburn YSA.
In addition to the Idaho Thunder, the Spokane Shadow also have two teams at the USCS National Cup XI this weekend. The club will have three girls teams taking part in the River City Cup.
The event kicks off with a pair of older age group games featuring local teams at 2:00 pm PT before getting going in earnest at 3:30 pm. Action continues the next two days as early as 8:00 am with the championship games scheduled to kick off no later than 3:00 pm Sunday.
