In the CCB9, last season's league champion Wenatchee were handed a loss in their first game of the campaign in a shootout defeat at home after a 2-2 stalemate against visiting Davis, which was fourth a year ago. The outcome was a replay of last year's league opener between the two in which Davis won at home 1-0, giving Wenatchee its lone loss.
Another surprising result in the CCB9 was West Valley, last place a year ago, answering both goals from Eastmont and getting a last minute winner to down last season's third place finisher.
In the MCC, last year's unbeaten champion Pasco dominated last place finisher Walla Walla 5-0 in the opener, but in a showdown of second and third place finishers, Chiawana delivered a statement with a 5-0 victory over the 2015 runners-up.
In eastern Washington, the GNL continued as the only league with official play. The results were no surprise based on last year's table, but Saturday did provide a historic moment as Pullman registered the school's first-ever victory on the road at Cheney in the long history of the two foes with Matt Winchell hitting from about 18 yards for the 2-1 overtime victory.
INWsn's CENTRAL WASHINGTON THREE STARS - Week 1
Edwin Aquina (Pasco) :: Assisted on both goals in a 2-1 overtime win at Richland to avoid the upset for the defending champions, and then tallied an assist in the 5-0 win against visiting Walla Walla.
Austin Stromme (West Valley) :: Scored the game-winning tally with just over a minute remaining to give West Valley, the bottom team in 2015, a 3-2 victory in the opener against Eastmont.
Shambel West (Chiawana) :: In a pair of blowout wins on the road, West tallied three assists in a 4-0 victory at Southridge and then provided two goals and an assist in the 5-0 victory at Kennewick.
INWsn's EASTERN WASHINGTON THREE STARS - Week 1
Sam Druffel (Pullman) :: Scored the second goal in the 2-0 win against visiting West Valley Thursday and tallied a goal and assist in the 2-1 road win against Cheney Saturday.
Will Pitzer (Pullman) :: Allowed just one goal, playing a half in the 2-0 home win Thursday against West Valley and playing the entire contest Saturday in the 2-1 win at Cheney.
Matt Winchell (Pullman) :: Tallied a goal and assist in a 2-0 victory at home versus West Valley Thursday and repeated the feat on the road Saturday in Cheney for a 2-1 victory.
