In what is shaping out to be an undoubtedly dramatic season, the opening weeks of Greater Spokane League play prior to spring break saw a number of tightly contested affairs as most of the contests played out at Merkel due to snow-covered and water-logged pitches.
The 4A contingent after three contests are only separated by three points, but the most impressive performance out of the gate may be from Central Valley, which faced a trio of tough opponents to kick off their season. They started things off with a bang, downing Mead 5-1 in the opener and had to turn around a day later and visit Gonzaga Prep, taking the decision 2-1 via a shootout. The following week started with a Tuesday afternoon rivalry showdown against rival University that needed extra time to decide a winner as the Bears moved to 3-0.
The rest of the 4A group all have at least two wins as they swept their 3A league foes. Ferris, meanwhile, is also 3-0 with CV and sit atop the table by a point courtesy of an overtime victory against rival Lewis & Clark.
Among the 3A schools, everything is up in the air. Shadle and North Central have shown moments of competitiveness and Mt Spokane is arguably one of the best defensive sides in the league having allowed just one goal in each of their three outings - all against 4A opponents. Unfortunately, the Wildcats are winless as they have yet to find the back of the net themselves.
The GNL and NEA are both in the initial phases of the season at spring break. Cheney is off to an unbeaten start with wins over East Valley and Pullman, but a shootout result against the Greyhounds has kept things extremely tight. Colville and Lakeside are off and cruising in the NEA with unbeaten records through their first few games, putting up some big numbers offensively.
