Saturday proved to be a big day for the Northeast A League as both Freeman and Lakeside advanced from their crossover matches with the Eagles raising eyebrows for their result away from home against the top-ranked team in the state. That success has carried into the state tournament, where Deer Park kicked things off with their biggest margin of victory on the year.
The Lakeside ladies were not on their own in the upset department as Cheney came to Union Saturday and knocked off Mead 2-0 in the final district playoff contest, settling things as their league meeting went scoreless before a Panther shootout win.

A corner six minutes in set the tone as Cheney took fought for the final state berth. Redirected at the near post, the ball came to Grace Grumbly near the penalty spot for the one-time volley. Another early strike in the second half added some insurance when a ball crossed in from the endline by Jenna Mansfield was bodied in by the upper thigh by Ellie Fisk inside the six.
