Saur leads debut Best XI for first week of college play

Each week INW Soccer News will release a list of the week’s best performances for men’s and women’s soccer in the region, recognizing players at schools in the region or those from the area that play elsewhere in the nation. With only one game this week on the men’s side, the list is combined.

INW PLAYER OF THE WEEK

F – Christa Saur (Boise, ID) – Carroll College – The striker knocked in four goals in a pair of victories over the weekend. She netted the second goal of a 3-1 victory Thursday against visiting 2011 Cascade Conference runners-up Northwest University and then dominated the match in a 4-1 win against the University of Mary with three more goals.

BEST OF THE INLAND NORTHWEST XI

G – Liz Boyden (Spokane, WA) – Idaho
– Though the team fell, 2-1, at Texas Tech, Boyden became the school’s all-time leader in goalkeeper minutes played. Upon returning home, she led the team to a 1-0 overtime victory Sunday against South Dakota, becoming the school’s career leader in shutouts with 12.

G – Kristen Hoon – Montana – Recorded 12 saves in season opening road trip, shutout out Wyoming, 2-0, with seven stops and falling, 1-0, to Air Force with the lone goal coming 10 minutes from time on a free kick that deflected in off a defender. Her play earned Big Sky Defensive Player of the Week recognition.

G – Maddy McDevitt – Boise State – Allowed just one goal in a pair of victories, posting a 1-0 win against New Mexico State with four saves and then stopping two shots in a 4-1 win against North Dakota State.

M – Lauren Hickock (Bozeman, MT) – Boise State – The redshirt senior delivered the cross on what would stand as the game-winner in the 71st minute and would add a goal of her own 11 minutes later in a one-on-one showdown with the North Dakota State keeper.

M – India Watne – Montana – Excellent play to set up the opening goal in a 2-0 road win against Wyoming.

M – Alex Mendez (Bonners Ferry, ID) – Great Falls – The sophomore got the season off to a good start with the opening goal in a 3-0 victory against the University of Lethbridge, and then set up one of two goals by Danny Delgadillo. Mendez was the lone men’s soccer player to make the list.

M/F – Sila Tuiofea – Gonzaga – The freshman impressed in her debut with a pair of goals. She made a great individual play for the game’s second strike in the 32nd minute and added an insurance strike from 18 yards out in the 72nd.

F – Rachel Strawn – Idaho State – The striker led the team to a pair of victories with three goals total on the weekend. She scored the second goal in a 2-0 victory against New Mexico State after providing two against North Dakota State, tallying an early equalizer in the 12th minute and the 3-2 overtime game-winner three minutes into extra time. For her efforts, she was recognized as the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week.

F – Kiley Godfrey – Idaho State – Strawn’s attacking partner also played a key role in the overtime win against North Dakota State, tallying a goal for a shortly-held lead and the assist on the game-winner in the contest.

F – Macie Netz (Great Falls, MT) – Carroll College – The junior opened the scoring in the 3-1 win versus Northwest University and then turned provider for Saur with assists on her teammate’s second and third goals a minute apart in the contest
