Region’s youth players making 2014 college declarations for NLI Day

It is that time of year. High school athletes are making their final decisions on which schools they are going to attend once they graduate this summer. A large number of players and schools made their announcements on National Letter of Intent day Wednesday, including several transfers.

One announcement that was of particular interest was the decision by CC Spokane standout Tasha Luu, a native of Colville, WA. The NWAACC East Division Women's MVP for 2013 chose to continue her athletic career and academic pursuits at Eastern Washington University, which recently announced as their new head coach Chad Bodnar, who was the head coach of NWAACC heated rival Walla Walla CC.

"I think Chad knows how to turn that program around and to be a part of it will be special. Knowing Chad is part of the reason I chose Eastern," said Luu. "Playing against him was a challenge but that's something I can now consider a blessing because he was able to see me play to my best ability. His love of the game and competitive attitude is a lot like my Bigfoot coach Jim Martinson; and even though I wish I could play for Jim another two years I think Eastern will be a good fit for me."

Also announcing their collegiate choices were former Spokane Shine players Chae Brown and Kara Marbury, a pair of up-and-coming players that showed well playing in the WPSL against collegiate-level talent. The Mead duo are both traveling quite some distance with Brown attending the University of Texas-Pan Am and Marbury following through on her previous verbal choice, the University of Illinois. Hanna Holm, who also briefly played and trained with the Shine, also made her longtime verbal commitment to the University of Minnesota - whose program visited Spokane last year to conduct a clinic in conjunction with SoccerEdge Academy - official by putting pen to paper.

COLLEGE COMMENTS

Jim Thomas, Boise State University: “Jenna Clubb is an incredibly tall, athletic, imposing central back with the ability to play very cleanly on the ball,” said Thomas. “She marks a change in recruiting for us where we will tend to bring in more Boise-based and Idaho-based players. Jenna is an incredibly skillful player with a lot of experience at both the high school and club level. We’re excited for her to join with the likes of Jess and Hailey for a long term standing back four that will be fantastic in the Mountain West Conference.” - More Information

Allison Gibson, Idaho State University: "Macy is the perfect example of where hard work and commitment can take you. Along with her former teammate Kat Roberts, Macy decided early in her career to take responsibility for her own development as a player and it has certainly paid off for her. As a local player who attended ISU camps for many years, I have watched her grow into a tremendously talented player.  I couldn't be happier that she has chosen Idaho State to live out her college playing career. - "Maria is our diamond in the rough.  She is a local player that we are extremely excited to have joining ISU soccer. She is one of the most unique and exciting players that I have come across in years.  She cuts through defenses in ways that literally leave people in awe as they watch her.  Maria and Macy will be sure to help fill Davis Field with their fan base and we could not be happier." - More information

Jennifer Simonetti, Eastern Oregon University: "We are very excited about our recruiting class for 2014, and have brought in a lot of players with the potential to fight for starting roles and serious playing time in their first year here. We are excited to bring in the talent and experience they all possess to help us improve on our 5th place finish in the CCC last year to a title!" - More Information

Chad Bodnar, Eastern Washington University: "This class includes some incredibly talented players. I'm very excited about adding some depth along with a number of impact players that will influence our team immediately. When I started the job in January, I knew we had some deficiencies that needed to be addressed. Scoring goals was a glaring one. We've gone out and found some very good attacking players as well as tried to make sure we filled the areas where we lost seniors in. A few of this year's class were already committed and others we had to go find late in the recruiting process. I'm confident this group will help us improve right away and set us up for success down the road." - More Information

Amy Edwards, Gonzaga Univ Women: “With the return of 24 quality players for 2014, we knew we would only need a few pieces to fill this recruiting class. We also knew it would need to address some specific areas, and we truly feel we have accomplished that goal with the addition of these three players. Allie and Tianna will add strength and toughness to our midfield core after the graduation of seniors Emily Eckmann and Ali Ohashi. They both have good skill levels and temperaments to play in the middle of the park for our team. Brittany is a dynamic forward that is going to provide even more speed and depth to an already strong group of attackers. She has pace and quickness to help balance our ability to break opponents down with both skill and athleticism. We are extremely excited about these three players joining the Zags in 2014!” - More Information

Stefanie Golan, Univ of Minnesota: "Hannah Holm is a really dynamic attacking player out of the state of Washington. She will come in and compete to play right away as an attacking midfielder. Hannah is strong and quick on the ball, combines well, and is always dangerous on the ball. Defensively, she can cover ground and reads the game well, but isn't afraid to lay out a tackle when necessary as well.  We become a much more dangerous attacking team with Hannah, and we are excited that we should have depth at the center of our midfield this year."

Mark Plakorus, University of Montana: "I expect them to come in and compete like crazy to get on the field. That's really my only expectation for them," he says, at once sharing his philosophy while also extending a challenge to his newcomers. Everything we do is based on a relentless effort to compete and to get better. If they do those things, they are going to make us more competitive and make us better." - More Information

CLUB COMMENTS

Abbas Faridnia, Spokane Shadow Technical Director: "What an accomplishment and honor for each of those players and families. The dedication and work of not only soccer, but the utmost importance of academics, allowing each of those players to continue on their path of student athletes. We wish each of them luck and success in their next endeavor as soccer players."
