Division I Round-up: Washington State rebounds with Oregon road sweep

The Cougars of Washington State were in the midst of an extremely rare three-game conference losing streak, but snapped it over the weekend with a pair of 2-1 victories on the road against Oregon and Oregon State.

Meanwhile in the Big Sky, Eastern Washington came up just shy of getting the second bye in the conference tournament, but handed the Idaho Vandals their first blemish on their conference record with a 1-1 draw. The result allowed Northern Colorado to snag second. The Eagles and Montana will both play in first round games Thursday in Moscow.

Boise State, however, will not be moving onto the postseason as a draw in their final game allowed others to grab the final berths in the Mountain West Conference tournament.

Here is a round-up of the action last week:

WOMEN #############

BIG SKY CONFERENCE

Friday, October 30

Eastern Washington 1 :: 1 Idaho
The Eagles ventured south looking to secure second and a first round tournament bye having already downed Idaho 2-1 in non-conference preseason play. The match was a scoreless stalemate until Amanda Pease (Bend, OR) struck with a header of a Clara Gomez corner - earned off an Alyssa Lloyd (Spokane, WA) shot saved onto the crossbar by Mallory Taylor - in the 70th minute of the match. Eastern responded with an excellent series of passes in the 83rd minute that finished with Delaney Romero (Yakima, WA / Walla Walla CC) connecting with Chloe Williams (Spokane, WA). Idaho outshot the Eagles 11-8 in regulation and 5-1 in overtime, but were unable to find a second tally with Taylor making six saves for the Eagles. Torrell Stewart only had to make one save at the other end, but also got a bit of help from a goal-line sliding save from defender Madison Moore, who denied a shot from Savannah Hoekstra (Spokane, WA) in the 93rd minute. The draw marked the first dropped points in league play for the Vandals.  MORE:  EWU [+]  UI [+]

Montana 0 :: 3 Texas (NL)
The Big 12's third-place Longhorns scored in the seventh minute of each half and added a third in the 81st minute. The Grizzlies had opportunities in the match, however, with the closest coming in the 62nd minute when a shot from Dani Morris' well-paced effort was enough to challenge outstanding goalkeeper Abby Smith, who got a slight piece of it. The ball continued, though, and was headed away off the line by a defender.  MORE [+]

Weber State 1 :: 0 Idaho State
The Bengals' last chance to register a win in league play came up short. Standout striker Maria Sanchez sent a shot off the crossbar eight minutes in and senior goalkeeper Sheridan Hapsic tied her career-high saves record in her final game with 13 stops. The rebound off a blocked shot, however, gave the visitors the opening as the second chance was put away in the 53rd for the deciding tally.  MORE [+]

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE

Friday, October 30

Boise State 1 :: 1 Utah State
The Broncos, needing a win to solidify their chances at continuing into the postseason, took the lead in the 49th minute when Kelsey Nicassio headed in a cross from Jessie Vogel. Perhaps unfocused from the bigger impact of taking the lead, the Broncos allowed the hosts to charge right down the field off the restart and tie it up 33 seconds later. Janelle Flores made a pair of great stops in overtime to keep things alive, but the Broncos were unable to find the winner, leaving them at the mercy of other results later in the evening that ultimately did not go their way.  MORE [+]
