Week Two HS Round-Up: Shootouts decide matches for Ferris, Moses Lake

Ferris celebrates shootout win with goalkeeper James Mann
The Greater Spokane League kicked off league play with a full slate of games over the week. Ferris went the distance in both contests to earn a split on the week. Meanwhile, in the CBB9, Moses Lake rallied from deficits in both games to come away with a pair of shootout victories.

The Saxons held the lead in both games in the first week of GSL play, but a pair of late equalizers forced them into going the distance in both contests. Eric Hollenbaugh scored in the 65th against visiting Mt Spokane on Wednesday, but Tyler Smith tied it up with two minutes left for the Wildcats, who prevailed 6-5 in the shootout to nab the 2-1 victory.

Two days later at Mead it was an identical replay for Ferris. Hollenbaugh put the Saxons on the board 14 minutes in with a 22-yard free kick that smacked off the underside of the bar and crossed the line before bouncing out of the goal.

Mead repeatedly had chances to pull even, including one that was cleared off the line by Evan Giem; but it was a second chance opportunity on a corner kick with two minutes remaining that was finally put away by Hayden DelPizzo. In the shootout, Saxons goalkeeper James Mann stopped Mead's fourth attempt as they went on to win the tiebreaker for a 2-1 victory.

The near-victory for Mead would have marked the second rally for the Panthers on the week as they came back from two down at home Wednesday. Down two at the break, Peter Weller took control of the contest in the second half with three unanswered goals, tallying two minutes in to get the Panthers on the board. Michael McLeod set up the next two to come away with the win.

Like Ferris, Moses Lake was also the center of the drama in the Columbia Basin Big Nine last week. On Tuesday they fell behind at home to last season's last-place finisher West Valley, but Erik Vega answered on a ball from Anthony Cortez in the 25th minute. The two remained deadlocked through the rest of the contest with the Chiefs taking the victory in the shootout.

On Friday the Chiefs had to rally from an even bigger hole on the road with Jorge Amador giving Eisenhower a two-goal advantage after just 15 minutes. Daniel Sinchuck scored a minute later and Cortez tied it up in the 17th for Moses Lake. The Chiefs actually took the lead before the break with a goal from Isaac Martinez, but had to settle for a 6-5 win in the shootout for a 4-3 victory in the contest.

West Valley nearly upset Davis as well, pulling even at home Friday in the close contest before Michael Raya scored a second goal to give Davis a 2-1 road win. In a showdown of last year's top two sides, defending league champion Wenatchee prevailed on the road, 1-0, via a penalty kick with eight minutes remaining at Sunnyside Friday.

In the Mid-Columbia Conference the Pasco Bulldogs, nearly suffered their first league loss in over a year. Visiting Chiawana, third last season, took the defending champions to a shootout before the tiebreaker finished in favor of the Bulldogs for a 2-1 victory. On Saturday, Pasco handily defeated visiting Kennewick, last-season's runners-up, 4-1 with two goals each from Edwin Aquino and Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez.
