HS DAILY - 11.1.16: MCC took 5 of 6 in Saturday playoff contests, penalties deciding three

Gonzaga Prep picked up the first victory of the day Saturday of the six GSL-MCC match-ups in 3A and 4A action, but after that things were tough for the Greater Spokane League. The MCC won the other five contests, two of them in shootouts and another in a narrow one-goal decision on a late shot from the spot as well.

Things were not surprisingly - based on regular season - one-sided in the 3A classification contests. Kamiakin rolled to a 5-1 win over Mt Spokane while Southridge drubbed North Central 7-0.

The interesting matches were at the 4A level. In the elimination portion of the bracket Gonzaga Prep took care of business with a 6-0 win against visiting Walla Walla while Lewis & Clark and Richland battled to a scoreless draw that saw the Bombers advance 4-2 from the spot. In another shootout, Chiawana advanced to the regional final after trailing Mead and playing to a 1-1 draw. Down south, a late penalty sent Central Valley to the elimination bracket as well as they were topped 3-2 by Hanford.

Here's a look around the action from Saturday...

4A PLAYOFFS (GSL-MCC)  #####

Walla Walla 0-6 Gonzaga Prep (Elimination Game):  The Bullpups controlled things from the beginning and got on board 12 minutes in when Hannah Plank headed a ball from the right side to the far post, where Trudi Timperman bellied the ball over the line. Six minutes later the efforts of Darby Doyle led to an own goal. The Blue Devils managed to keep the hosts at bay the rest of the half, but it took less than a minute for Timperman to set up Grace Cooper in the second half. Eva Kennar scored in the 50th and Corynn Vigil put things well out of reach with back-to-back goals in the 63rd and 65th. Prep now faces league foe Central Valley in the next round of the elimination bracket.

Lewis & Clark 0-0 (2-4 SO) Richland (Elimination Game):  Scoreless again. After going the entire campaign with the lone shutout against woeful Rogers, the Tigers played to a second consecutive scoreless stalemate in the postseason. Penalties, though, again proved to be their undoing. The Tigers outshot the Bombers 14-4 in the contest, but were unable to get anything past Kiata Litka. Jessie Quacquarini made three saves for LC. Richland advances to face Mead in the continuation of the elimination bracket.

Chiawana 1-1 (4-3 SO) Mead:  The Panthers had plenty of close chances to score but the lone tally from Katie Kuka's in the 52nd minute put them in front. It was her second goal of the campaign and first since she scored in the second game of the GSL season. At the other end, the Panthers did extremely well in limiting the chances for U16 US international Summer Yates. But with the one solid chance she had, she beat goalkeeper Bailey Thompson to the ball and with a deft touch on the bounce, pulled it to the side of the on-rushing Thompson and then knocked it into the open net with her second touch. It was Yates' 30th goal in official play despite missing several weeks for international duty. Mead came close a couple of times late but were left going to a shootout. Alisha Ramos saved the first and fifth round efforts for Chiawana, giving the Riverhawks a 4-3 win in the tiebreaker and putting them through to the regional championship.

Central Valley 2-3 Hanford:  Kaelyn Barnes put the Bears on the board four minutes into the match on a ball from Anna Hilbert, but the host Falcons answered in the 29th with a goal from Dani Mendoza, who went on to put Hanford in front in the 51st with her seventh of the campaign. Barnes struck again to tie things up with 10 minutes left, but a penalty allowed Ellie Horton to put the Falcons through to the regional championship.

3A PLAYOFFS (GSL-MCC)  #####

Kamiakin 5-1 Mt Spokane:  Aaliyah Valladares played a key role in the victory, setting up Maddie Morgan, who scored from a sharp angle five minutes in, and tallying herself in the 24th when she created a turnover and quickly launched a shot from about 25 yards that soared over the keeper. Emma Johnson put the lead to three in the 47th before Mt Spokane got on the board via Sierra Poquette in the 51st. Paige Savage, though, put the match out of range with a pair of goals, nodding in a long free kick from Valladares in the 58th and finishing another ball from Valladares in the 65th as they advanced to the regional final.

North Central 0-7 Southridge:  The top seed had no problem dispatching the Indians. Kayleen Sambrano and Kelly Brown dominated the contest with Sambrano tallying the opening goal setting up the third. Kelly Brown scored the next two goals in addition to have an assist on the day. Morgan Russell also scored twice and Haley Thomas had a pair of assists. Kambree Gadish also scored and Tiara Valadez recorded her eighth shutout of the campaign to advance to the regional final.

4A PLAYOFFS (CBBN)  #####

Eastmont 1-0 Davis (Elimination Game):  In yet another tight affair between the two, Eastmont finally got the better of the Pirates after falling 3-2 in a shootout and 1-0 in the regular season. Emma Simpson broke a lengthy stalemate in the 65th minute to send Eastmont through to the second round.

Sunnyside 0-3 Moses Lake (Elimination Game):  The Chiefs took care of business with Denali Knowles and Abby Rathbun leading the way. Knowles scored the first via Rathbun in the 28th with the two reversing roles six minutes later. The visitors pushed it to three within the first half-minute of the second half with an own goal.

2A PLAYOFFS (GNL & CWAC)  #####

West Valley 1-1 (2-4 SO) Clarkston:  The two sides were locked in a stalemate for over an hour before Taylen Wohl found Makinzie Packwood for her 19th goal of the campaign to put the Bantams in front in the 67th minute. The win would not come easy, though, with Maddy McLaughlin scoring her first goal in official play with five minutes remaining to tie things up. Things remained level with Clarkston eventually prevailing in the tiebreaker 4-2. s
