HS UPDATE - GSL Enters Final Week of Play With Intrigue

Going into the final week of games for the Greater Spokane League regular season, it has proven to be arguably one of the most competitive campaigns among the 4A schools in league history. Courtesy of a thrilling win Friday in a battle of unbeatens against Ferris, the Central Valley Bears have control of matters as they finish up with a pair of 3A opponents.

The race to get to that point, though, is where all the intrigue is at and continues to be in the race for seeding and postseason berths. Nearly every game between 4A opponents this season has been a dramatic affair with 11 of the 13 decided by one goal or shootout. In fact, seven matches went past regulation with three concluding in the tiebreaker. Though scoring has been tight with a 2.9 total goals per game average, shutouts have been hard to come by as well with only three in the 13 games, two of them coming in a scoreless draw between Lewis & Clark and Mead that was decided from the spot. The only two games decided by more than one goal were the season opener that saw Central Valley score four in the second half for a 5-1 win over Mead and the most recent match, a close-fought 2-0 LC victory Saturday at Gonzaga Prep that kept the Tigers in the hunt for the postseason.

That race for the postseason should be an interesting story this week as four teams are vying for the final two berths with CV clinched and Ferris a comfortable five points clear of the pack, which has Mead, Prep and University tied at 13 points and the LC three points back. Key match-ups on the slate will be Gonzaga Prep's two matches at Ferris and at home against Mead. University's pair of games against Mt Spokane and North Central could also play a role.

The race for the 3A postseason is not quite as dramatic as the foursome have all gone without a single point so far this year against 4A opposition and each has a pair of 4A matches to close out the season. North Central leads thanks to a narrow 1-0 victory against Mt Spokane, but the Wildcats could post an upset via their outstanding defense to make things interesting. Shadle Park's victory against Rogers has them in position for the final spot.
