Soccer kicks off Red Lion Challenge in Spokane Thursday

Dwight Merkel Sports Complex hosts Red Lion Challenge soccer events Aug 23-25, Sept 7-8
The Cascade Collegiate Conference and Frontier Conference of the NAIA begin the men’s soccer element of their four-sport Red Lion Challenge Thursday evening in Spokane at the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.

The debut of the event will feature the CCC’s Northwest Christian University (Eugene, OR) playing Frontier’s 21st-ranked University of Great Falls (MT) at 5:00 pm PT. It continues Friday with a doubleheader that starts at 5:00 pm with NCU playing Rocky Mountain College (Billings, MT) followed by UGF facing Warner Pacific College (Portland). The event wraps up Saturday with WPC versus RMC at 5:00 pm.

Warner Pacific was picked in the CCC preseason coaches poll to finish fourth in the league with NCU finishing last, the same positions they finished in last season. WPU was 6-5-3 in the conference a year ago with an 8-6-3 record overall while Northwest Christian was 1-12-1 in the CCC and 3-14-1 overall. The Red Lion Challenge will kick off the season for both schools.

In the Frontier Conference, where UGF and RMC are two of only three schools with men’s soccer, Great Falls finished 17th in the final poll of 2011 after reaching the Second Round of the national championship tournament, upsetting 11th-ranked Concordia of the CCC, 3-2, in the First Round. Great Falls was 8-2 in the Frontier Conference and 16-5 overall while RMC was 2-5 in conference and 8-8 overall.

The UGF Argos are the only school of the four that have already played, posting a 3-0 victory over the Canada’s University of Lethbridge Sunday with a pair of goals from sophomore Danny Delgadillo and a goal and assist by Miguel Mendez (Bonners Ferry, ID).

The women’s soccer portion of the Red Lion Challenge will be held September 7-8 featuring UGF and their conference foe Carroll College, a nationally ranked program, going up against Corban University and Eastern Oregon University.
