Report: Expanding WPSL Northwest set for 2013; league AGM marred by turmoil

The Northwest Division of the Women’s Premier Soccer League has set forth the infrastructure for the 2013 campaign, expanding from five clubs to eight with four teams each in Washington and Oregon. New to the division will be a controversial third Seattle-based club and two new teams to replace the departed Portland Rain.

It is free agency week for the new pro National Women’s Soccer League and the league’s supplemental draft will quickly follow, but don’t expect Spokane native and Seattle Pacific University All-American standout striker Megan Lindsay to be among those signing on the dotted line. Despite a desire to play in the league, the city’s record high school scoring leader is looking for new adventures.

“I would be interested in play for any team in the NWSL, but my real hope is to play for a team overseas,” Lindsay, who recently wrapped up her collegiate career at Seattle Pacific. “I would especially love playing for the Seattle Reign and representing my amazing city, and I also was looking to play for the Boston Breakers, and even Chicago for a while.

Unprecedented Gold Cup presence for NW in 2013 edition

CONCACAF announced the venue list for the 2013 Gold Cup Wednesday, unveiling that the 12-team tournament will be held at 13 different venues around the United States, including Seattle, Portland and Salt Lake City.

No players from the Inland Northwest were selected the past two days in the Major League Soccer or National Women’s Soccer League drafts at the NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis, but there was plenty of action for the Northwest on the other side of the Cascades.

The Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers picked up three players, combined, and their NWSL counterparts Reign and Thorns tabbed four players each in the new league’s inaugural college draft.
