INW DI College Recap – Week Seven: Montana keeps Big Sky lead; WSU stumbles in PAC-12

Among the Division I action this week, the Big Sky featured a match of two unbeatens with Montana playing host to Idaho. The Grizzlies prevailed in overtime with the Vandals going on to rebound two days later at Eastern Washington.

Washington State returned home from their impressive PAC-12 trip to California, but suffered an atypical result in a loss to Arizona, rebounding for a draw against Arizona State with another outstanding defensive outing.

Here is a rundown of the area DI schools and their conferences as well as how players from the Inland Northwest performed around the nation in the past week.

BIG SKY CONFERENCE

Friday, October 10

Idaho 0-1 (OT) Montana
In a showdown of unbeatens, the Grizzlies needed overtime to get the decision against the visiting Vandals despite outshooting them 18-5 and goalkeeper Kailey Norman not needing to make any saves for the shutout. Defender Brooke Moody converted a penalty six minutes into extra time after Savannah Witt (Billings, MT) was pulled down after beating a defender.  UM MORE [+] - UI MORE [+]

Sheridan Hapsic made six saves for the Bengals, but a goal from the visitors in the 16th minute stood as the deciding goal with Caitlin Plese (Spokane Shine) making nine saves at the other end.  MORE [+]

Idaho State 3-2 (OT) Sacramento State
The Hornets would not go away, but it was greater-Sacramento area native Amanda Ellsworth that gave the Bengals the road win. Maria Sanchez (American Falls, ID) started the scoring 14 minutes in when she received the ball from Katherine Roberts (Pocatello, ID) and beat a defender to net the opener. The hosts, though, pulled even in the 43rd on a shot that caromed off the post and Hapsic for an own goal. Ellsworth put Idaho State back in front in the 58th minute on a ball from Lauren Bermudez and after overtime was forced by a 76th minute equalizer she wasted little time finding the winner, nodding in a corner from Sanchez 90 seconds into extra time. Ellsworth has quite the history with her hometown program, scoring every year against the Hornets for a total of seven goals in four years, including all four game-winners with all four meetings decided by a single goal starting with the overtime winner in her freshman season. Five of them were at Sacramento (three games).  MORE [+]

Idaho 1-0 Eastern Washington
Two minutes into the second half Gabby Leong scored the winner on a ball from Kavita Battan, who sent a ball off the crossbar five minutes before the break. Torell Stewart made seven saves in the shutout. The outcome was a complete reversal of August's non-conference meeting in which the Eagles won 4-0.  UI MORE [+] - EWU MORE [+]

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE

Friday, October 10

Fresno State 1-2 Boise State
The Broncos came out on top in a game featuring an unusual scoring summary. A scoreless first half was followed by each team getting on the board via own goals. The Broncos claimed the lead in the 57th when a throw-in from Kelsey Nicassio deflected in off a Bulldog. The visitor's equalizer in the 83rd was similar, with a throw going in off Hailey DeVries. The Broncos nabbed the win, though, with just 14 seconds to spare before overtime with Shannon Schueren, Kayla Tucker and Madi Campbell combining on a quick counter up the field, switching sides en route to setting up Kelli Drobney's one-timer.  MORE [+]

WEST COAST CONFERENCE - WOMEN

Thursday, October 9

Gonzaga 2-0 San Diego
The Bulldogs continued their best start to conference play in program history with their third consecutive victory. Katey Pennington (Boise, ID) fueled the road win with a goal and assist, finding Heather Johnson with a throw-in in the 54th minute that led to a fantastic 20-yard finish. The senior defender then scored a nice tally of her own, the first of her career, off the rebound of a blocked shot in the 82nd minute. Christie Tombari (Spokane, WA) made four saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Saturday, October 11

Gonzaga 0-2 BYU
From sea level to the heights of Provo, the Bulldogs were holding off the Cougars with a Tombari having a great night in which she finished with nine saves. Fortune turned on her, though, over the course of four minutes in the second half. Despite a tough angle on the left side, the first was narrowly out of her reach as it went far post, slipping just inside the woodwork. The second was a fluke own goal in which the ball caromed off the post and then off of Tombari and in.  MORE [+]

PAC-12 CONFERENCE

Thursday, October 9

Stanford 1-2 UCLA

Friday, October 10

Arizona 4-1 Washington State
It was just one of those games for the Cougars. They gave up more goals in the contest than combined tally of their first 10 matches (three goals) of the year. They grabbed the initial lead 14 minutes in when defender Jamie Schneiders tallied on Kailiana Johnson's through ball. Then things unraveled. In an eight-minute span, the Wildcats evened it up in the 26th, took the lead in the 32nd and added some insurance in the 34th. They put thoughts of a rally off the board with a fourth on a scrum three minutes into the second half. The result ended the Cougars' nine-game win streak against Arizona.  MORE [+]

Utah 0-1 Oregon
Kristen Parr (Bend, OR) set up the game-winner in the 15th minute for the Ducks.

California 2-1 USC
Colorado 1-0 Oregon State
Arizona State 1-2 Washington

Sunday, October 12

Arizona State 0-0 Washington State
The Cougars returned to their exemplary defensive standard, shutting out a Sun Devil squad, ranked 19 and 20, that had scored in all 13 games so far this season. Gurveen Clair made five saves in the stalemate while the Cougs forced seven from her counterpart and saw Jocelyn Jeffers' long shot in the 60th ring off the crossbar.  MORE [+]

Parr opened the scoring for the Ducks seven minutes into the contest only to see the visitors rally for the win in the final 16 minutes.
