INW DII-III College Recap – Week Eight: Stalemate for Whitworth in battle for first; mixed results around the region

Among the action this week, the Northwest Nazarene men and Central Washington women had the best of the mixed results on the road this week, each going 1-0-1 in GNAC play. In the Northwest Conference the second installment of the battle for first between Whitworth and Puget Sound finished as a stalemate while the Whitworth women won the showdown with local rival Whitman Wednesday with a late tally.

Here is a rundown of the area schools and their conferences as well as how players from the Inland Northwest performed around the nation in the past week.

Thursday, October 16

MSU-Billings 3-2 South Dakota Mines 
It was not until their third go-ahead goal that the Yellowjackets made it stick against the one-win Hardrockers. Midfielder Kyle Emerick (Billings, MT) connected with Colin Ralston five minutes into the contest to give the visitors the advantage but the hosts answered back in the 23rd and kept it level to the break. Jorge Paez put the Yellowjackets back in front on a ball from David Loeung in the 52nd minute only to see the home side even it up again eight minutes later. In the 68th minute Emerick set up the winner, finding Rhys Lambert for the deciding tally.  MORE [+]

Northwest Nazarene 1-1 Mary 
An own goal in the 30th minute gave the Crusaders the led until the hosts tied it up in the 59th minute.  MORE [+]

MSU-Billings 1-2 Mary 
The hosts grabbed an early lead in the second minute and doubled in the 64th. The Yellowjackets answered just four minutes later when Julian Toenges found Colin Ralston but they were unable to complete the rally.  MORE [+]

Northwest Nazarene 1-0 South Dakota Mines 
It was a tough trip against a pair of struggling teams, but an 18th minute strike from Rene Duevel on a ball from Marshall Hartley was all they needed for the victory.  MORE [+]

Central Washington 0-0 Western Oregon

MSU-Billings 1-2 (OT) Western Washington
Alisa Sagdahl converted a penalty to open the scoring in the 37th minute. They were minutes away from handing the Vikings their first loss of the season when a free kick led to the equalizer in the 87th minute, sending the game to overtime where the hosts prevailed seven minutes into the extra period.  MORE [+]

Northwest Nazarene 2-0 Simon Fraser 
Lexi Fesenbek guided the Crusaders to the road win, finding Makena Dandley with her corner kick in the 64th to break the deadlock and then connecting with Laura Seymour (Spokane Valley, WA) in the 90th on a cross to cap the contest. Daniele Ortiz made five saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Central Washington 3-1 Saint Martin's 
Mackenzie Nolte put the Wildcats up 14 minutes in on a one-on-one situation with the keeper in which the initial attempt was stopped before she scored on the rebound. Viktoriya Vasina in the 29th minute connected with Bailey Martoncik, who fired it over the reach of the keeper. The hosts pulled one back two minutes later to be within one at the break but Shaina Mitchell put another one over the keeper's reach five minutes into the second half to secure the win.  MORE [+]

Northwest Nazarene 0-2 Western Washington 
The unbeaten division leaders scored four minutes in and added some insurance in the 25th as they as they dominated to the tune of a 29-7 shot ratio that forced nine saves from Ortiz.  MORE [+]

MSU-Billings 4-0 Simon Fraser 
Sagdahl put the Yellowjackets on the board in the 23rd minute and Chelsea Shuman (Kalispell, MT) doubled the advantage in the 44th. The two combined two minutes after the break with Sagdahl scoring off a ball from Shuman. An own goal created by an Ashley Marra cross rounded out the scoring in the 61st and Krystal Daniels made just one save in the shutout performance as they outshot the hosts 14-2.  MORE [+]

DII WOMEN'S NOTES

Defender Malia Maack (Spokane, WA) continues to contribute at the other end for New Mexico Highlands, scoring the opening goal in a 3-1 victory over CSU-Pueblo... Mickie Piechowski (Boise, ID) scored the 2-1 overtime winner for Regis University in the victory Wednesday against unbeaten Colorado School of Mines, who suffered their first defeat in 34 games dating back to 2012. Maggie Saras (Boise, ID) provided the assist on the goal. Piechowski went on to record a pair of assists in a 5-0 victory against Colorado Mesa Sunday.

Whitman 0-1 Whitworth 
The Missionaries' Linnea Soo hit the crossbar in the first half, but it was a scramble off a corner with two minutes left that finished with defender Hannah Bokma (Spokane, WA) knocking it home for the dramatic victory. Andrea Stump made four saves for the shutout.  INWsn REPORT [+]

Whitman 2-1 Pacific Lutheran 
Trailing from the 12th minute, Lena de Guzman scored a pair of goals courtesy of Clara Merlino to lead the Missionaries to the win. The first came from 12 yards in the 39th minute and provided the game-winner from about 18 yards out in the 52nd minute to down the 25th-ranked Lutes.  MORE [+]

The league-leaders scored three minutes into the match and pushed it out of reach with a second in the 41st and the final goal in the 64th.  MORE [+]

Lewis & Clark 2-1 George Fox
Kacie Morgan (Pullman, WA) helped set up the goal for the Bruins, who were unable to complete the comeback.

Willamette 0-4 Linfield

Whitman 0-1 Puget Sound 
Facing the top two sides in the league, the Missionaries were unable to complete the sweep with the Loggers' goal in the 16th minute standing firm for the victory.  MORE [+]

Whitworth 1-1 Puget Sound 
The hosts jumped in front 11 minutes into the match, but Whitworth answered quickly with Sam Engle dropping the ball back to Kyle Cacoyannis for a finish from outside the area in the 17th minute. Timmy Costa made five saves as the game continued deadlocked at one each.  MORE [+]

The Lutes scored in the 34th on a penalty and doubled the lead in the 70th.  MORE [+]

Sunday, October 19 

Whitman 0-3 Puget Sound 
The Loggers scored 75 second into the match on a penalty and added two more before the break to secure the victory.  MORE [+]

Whitworth 4-3 Pacific Lutheran 
The Lutes opened the scoring in the 31st minute but five minutes later Mike Ramos (Spokane, WA) kicked off a run of four consecutive for the Pirates with a penalty after being fouled in the box. Another penalty following a handball was converted by Engle in the 45th. Engle headed in a Spencer Wolfe corner at the far post in the 51st and Tyler Clarke scored from close range on a ball from Robby Ubben in the 73rd to push the lead to three. It proved to be the winner as the hosts scored two in the next six minutes to pull within one.  MORE [+]
