NWAC East Tonight 8.23.18: Hazy Start for Starfire Friendlies

Air quality from the wildfire smoke played a bit of havoc on the schedule at the Starfire Friendlies on Thursday, but a majority of games did manage to get played after the morning sessions were called off. It was a largely successful day for the NWAC East sides as they went 6-3-4 on the day against opponents from other divisions (2-2-1 men, 4-1-3 women).

Starfire Friendlies - MEN

Treasure Valley 0-4 Spokane :: Arturo Bahena scored twice and set up the other two in a dominant opener against fellow East side TVCC that was scheduled after other matchups were cancelled. Diego Esquivel (Post Falls, ID) tallied a goal and assist as well and Chava Velazquez (Driggs, ID) scored the other goal. Caleb Garbuio made four saves for the shutout.

Lane 0-1 Wenatchee Valley :: Cristian Barajas (Chelan, WA) scored the lone goal for the victory via Luis Navarrete (Wenatchee, WA) in the 21st minute with Ulysses Gonzalez (Mattawa, WA) making eight saves for the shutout.

Clark 0-2 Walla Walla :: Kevin Meraz-Rodriguez (Pasco, WA) scored the opener early in the second half via Freddy Rodriguez (Hermiston, OR) and Andres Arroyo (Pasco, WA) connected with Lupe Barajas (Nampa, ID) for the second with 11 left. Antonio Campos (Hermiston, OR) stopped two shots for the clean sheet.

Rogue 2-2 Columbia Basin :: Armando Nieblas (Pasco, WA) put the Hawks on the board first 25 minutes in, but after a Rogue comeback they needed the equalizer from Emilio Herrera (Prosser, WA) with five minutes left for the draw.

Chemeketa 4-1 North Idaho :: Junior Labra (Blackfoot, ID) scored the lone goal for the Cardinals in the loss.

Shoreline 2-1 Blue Mountain :: Ernesto Salinas (Twin Falls, ID) opened the scoring in the eighth minute for the Timberwolves but Shoreline rallied for the win.

Notes: Paul Cuevas (Yakima, WA) scored the winner for Skagit Valley in a 1-0 win against Bellevue.

Starfire Friendlies - WOMEN

Chemeketa 0-5 Columbia Basin :: Danielle Chang opened the scoring in the 17th with Elena Mendoza (Othello, WA) scoring the next two. Rebecca Wheeler and Mikayla Hunter (Kennewick, WA) put the match away in the final 13 minutes as Kaile Kauanui cruised to the shutout with a single save.

Rogue 0-4 Yakima Valley :: After a scoreless first half the Yaks busted things wide open in the first 10 after intermission with Natalie Wright scoring in the 48th and finding Kellie Pack in the 55th. She also connected with Corynn Vigil (Spokane, WA) for the third. Brittany Little (Yakima, WA) capped the scoring as the Yaks recorded the shutout with neither Brynlee Ward (Pocatello, ID) or Ally Glebe making a save in goal.

Clackamas 0-0 North Idaho :: Kaysha Bailey (Lewiston, ID) made three stops for the Cardinals as they battled to the draw despite a 12-3 shots on goal advantage.

Green River 1-1 Wenatchee Valley :: A 72nd minute equalizer from Erin Aarnold (Wenatchee, WA), set up by Kendall Carlton (Selah, WA) three minutes after falling behind gave the Knights the draw.

Clark 2-1 Walla Walla :: Taylen Wohl scored an equalizer for the Warriors, but a second half goal decided the result.

Lane 2-2 Spokane :: After falling behind by two, the Bigfoot pulled even in the second half with Shannon Frucci (Spokane, WA) finding Molly Thies (Cashmere, WA) in the 55th and Cheris Brown (Spokane, WA) netting the equalizer in the 70th.

Grays Harbor 0-4 Blue Mountain :: The freshman duo of Olivia Luna (Irrigon, OR) and Kayla Guzman put everyone on notice that the Timberwolves may have some bite this season as they combined on every goal, finishing with two goals and two assists each.

Portland 0-2 Treasure Valley :: No details available for TVCC.

Notes: Cindy Vasquez (Leavenworth, WA) scored the second goal for Peninsula as they tried to rally from two down, but it was not enough in a 4-2 loss to Highline.
