College Notebook 10.16.19: Gonzaga Ladies Double Historic Result

In 26 previous meetings, perennial power Portland had won 25 times against Gonzaga and played to a tie once. The Zags finally broke through against their WCC foe in Spokane last year for their first win. Visiting Portland would surely be a different scenario one would imagine, but the Bulldogs were able to repeat the accomplishment.

WOMEN - BIG SKY CONFERENCE

The Grizzlies picked up four points as their closest challengers in the table suffered losses this week, giving them a little added space at the top. Meanwhile, unbeaten Eastern Washington picked up a pair of road wins to jump up the table from fifth to third.

Friday

Eastern Washington 3-0 Idaho State... The Eagles broke through just before the break when McKaley Goffard (Kennewick, WA) found Kendall Pope (Kennewick, WA) in the 43rd minute. Brooke Dunbar doubled the lead less than two minutes after the intermission and scored a second via Pope at the hour mark to put things out of reach as the Eags took control, outshooting the hosts 11-2 in the second half. Kelsee Winston (Pasco, WA) finished with four saves in the shutout.

Idaho 1-1 Weber State... After a lengthy stalemate the hosts took the lead in the 72nd minute, but the Vandals fired back quickly through Savannah Foster. Julia Byerlein held on for the draw with 13 saves despite Idaho being outshot 26-9 for the games and 7-0 in overtime as they played with 10 after Juliana deTar's send-off in the 87th.

Montana 1-0 Northern Arizona... An Allie Larsen free kick in the 69th minute proved to be the difference as it found the head of Alexa Coyle for the winner. Claire Howard made three saves for the clean sheet.

Northern Colorado 3-1 Southern Utah

Sunday

Idaho 1-2 Idaho State... The Bengals picked up their first victory over their in-state rivals since the Vandals rejoined the Big Sky in 2014 (0-4-1) with their last win coming in a 2013 non-conference meeting in Pocatello. Idaho was 8-2-1 versus ISU in the last 13 coming into the contest. The win also snapped a 12-game winless run in league play for the Bengals. Makena Bambei gave ISU the lead just three minutes into the match courtesy of Rachel Brownell. Five minutes into the second half Bergl Baldursdottir found Maddie Haas (Lewiston, ID), who took a touch and ripped a ball into the upper corner from about 20 yards. The two went the rest of the way deadlocked until a penalty in the 104th minute was converted by Karlin Wurlitzer.

Eastern Washington 1-0 Weber State... The hosts provided the winning goal for the Eagles via an own goal in the 15th minute that Winston made stand with three saves. The goal was created when Sariah Keister was attempting to return the ball to Riley Walkington (Sandpoint, ID) on a give-and-go as the two drove up through the box. A Wildcat defender attempted to intercept the cross, but redirected it into the back of the net.

Montana 0-0 Southern Utah... Claire Howard went the distance with four saves in the scoreless stalemate, recording her fourth shutout in the last five games (the start of league play).
