College Notebook 10.24.19: Races for Postseason Heating Up

As November nears, so do the conference and national tournaments. Simple mathematics makes its way from the classrooms in many situations as the players examine the point totals and where their teams stand in the chase for the postseason.

-- For games through Sunday, October 20 --

WOMEN - BIG SKY CONFERENCE

Montana and Eastern Washington's shutout runs continue to highlight the top of the table. Both benefited as well from Sacramento State's unbeaten run continuing. The Griz battled them to a draw Friday before the Hornets went to Northern Colorado and handed them their second loss, allowing EWU to move up to second. The trio head into the final week-plus with unbeaten records as they jockeying for the conference tournament seeding heats up with many of the top four, who have all clinched berths, squaring off against one another. The race for the final two berths is also wide open with the next five teams separated by five points.

Friday

Sacramento State 0-0 Montana... Claire Howard stopped four for the Griz as they battled the Hornets, who kept their nationally-leading (tied) unbeaten streak going at 14 games. It was only the second time this season the conference's leading scoring Hornets had been shutout (scoreless draw at Hawaii).

Southern Utah 0-3 Eastern Washington... A deflected ball from Taylor Matheny (Richland, WA) was put away by Brooke Dunbar 10 minutes into the contest for the Eags. Brittany Delridge (Missoula, MT) chipped the goalkeeper in the 28th and four minutes a straight up header from Dunbar in the box dropped a few yards over to Delridge for a header of her own to finish the play inside the six. Kelsee Winston (Pasco, WA) finished the match without a save as the Eagles limited SUU to just three shots.

Northern Arizona 2-1 Idaho... The visitors took the lead in the 10th minute with Taylor Brust putting things level at the hour mark with a blast from around 50 yards out for the Vandals. NAU, though, struck for the winner in the 72nd.

Portland State 1-3 Northern Colorado

Sunday

Portland State 0-4 Montana... Howard made one save in the scoreless first half, and it would prove to be the only one needed as she cruised to an easy program record 25th shutout performance. The clean sheet was her eighth of the season and was her sixth in seven Big Sky games with a current run of four games (including two scoreless draws). Oh, and the Griz scored in this one too. Rita Lang launched a flurry in the 54th minute via Jaden Griggs. Two minutes later Avery Adams hit Taylor Stoeger to make it two with Lang striking for her second just another minute later courtesy of Caitlin Rogers. Sami Siems closed things out off a ball from Alexa Coyle.

Southern Utah 1-2 (OT) Idaho... Brooke Sosa found Berglind Baldursdottir in the final minute of the first half to give the Vandals the lead, and it appeared the six-game winless run was coming to an end until the visitors tallied with just over two minutes left. In overtime Brust struck for her second of the weekend, finding the back corner of the net on a 30-yard free kick in the 100th minute.

Northern Arizona 0-2 Eastern Washington... Having set up the opener Friday, Matheny this time was the beneficiary of a deflection, scoring the opener in the 20th minute. Eight minutes later she one-timed off the touchline a cross into the box that Sariah Keister deflected past the keeper. Winston made six saves for her fourth consecutive shutout.

Idaho State 0-0 Weber State... Outshot 14-9 in the game, Katie Hogarth made nine saves for the Bengals.

Sacramento State 1-0 Northern Colorado

MEN - GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

Simon Fraser's usual role of being the dominant team has been greatly challenged this season. In addition to suffering a streak-breaking home loss earlier this season their trip to Northwest Nazarene and MSU Billings this week proved a difficult task as they were only able to find one goal, though still earned a big four points that could prove crucial at the end.

Having lost 9-0 on aggregate a year ago, the Nighthawks nearly picked up points for just the third time in 10 games (0-7-2) against SFU since they were the last team to defeat the Clan in BC in 2014 prior to this season. A 21st minute goal, however, was enough for the Canadian side to get the win. Sawyer Price made five saves in the loss.

Seattle Pacific 0-2 Concordia
