HS Daily - 11.1.17: Tigers Rally for Win at Mead; WV Tops Rival EV

Halloween playoff action was full of treats with two back-and-forth affairs and had a trio of tricks with three players scoring three or more.

In a pair of wild upset contests, Lewis & Clark rallied in the final 13 minutes of the second half to earn a victory at Mead to keep its playoff run going in an elimination match, and fourth-seeded West Valley rallied twice at rival East Valley to claim the district title and a spot in the state tournament, sending the regular season champions to the crossover play-in games versus the CWAC.

Summer Yates lit it up again for Chiawana with all four goals for the Riverhawks, though, Richland made a rally attempt in the second half that made the contest close in the final 10 minutes. In the end, Chiawana advanced for a showdown with Lewis & Clark for the final 4A state berth.

In the 3A action Mt Spokane rolled to an 11-0 win against Kennewick with Allie Baribault and Amber Hickman registering hat-tricks in the contest. They will square off against North Central, 2-0 winners against rival Shadle, Thursday with the winner moving on to play Thursday's Kamiakin-Southridge loser on Saturday for the second berth to the state tournament.

PLAYOFF RESULTS

4A - Lewis & Clark 3-2 Mead
Though Mead controlled much of the play in the first half, it was the Tigers that went into the break with the lead thanks to a nice 18th minute goal in which several players orchestrated a switch from the right flank all the way across the top of the box to Kiki Bourekis on the left side of the box. Bourekis found enough space to send the ball into the six and found the far side netting for the opener. With the downslope in the second half the Panthers quickly found and equalizer and went in front after just second minutes. Tia Frahm nodded in a corner from Kendal Houston in the 44th and three minutes later Margo Schoesler poked a bouncing ball over the keeper from about 10 yards to put Mead ahead. LC fought back though, and JV call-up Ella Magnuson proved huge for the second consecutive game for the Tigers. The freshman put away a follow-up opportunity on a corner in the 67th minute to tie things up. Then with six minutes remaining Brown, who assisted on the opener, got the behind the defense and put it past the keeper for what held as the winner despite a Mead opportunity going off the crossbar in the final moments of the match.

4A - Richland 2-4 Chiawana
A long effort from Summer Yates kicked thing off in the fifth minute and Kylie Alvarez set her up for her second in the 26th. She scored again in the final minutes of the half for a commanding lead. The Bombers fought back, though, with Lauren Moore finding Megan Haugen in the opening minutes of the second half and then Gabrielle Fillmore with eight minutes remaining to make it a close contest. Yates, however, answered three minutes later for a little breathing room.

3A - Kennewick 0-11 Mt Spokane
Emily Williams, Emma Main and Amber Hickman scored the first three goals in the opening 18 minutes. Allie Baribault set up the second of those three and then scored the next two before intermission for a five-goal lead at half. After the break she completed the hat-trick after Hickman scored her second.    Hickman ended the back-and-forth between the two with her third in the 55th. From there it was Ava Sargent, Ally Dockley and Mikaela Thompson scoring to round out the match. Averie Carlsen and Anna Boyer split the shutout.

3A - Shadle Park 0-2 North Central
The Indians got a little vengeance from their regular season shootout defeat. Izzy Garcia scored seven minutes in on a ball from Kaylee Mellgren and added some insurance in the 31st. Payton Flannery and Danielle Jones split the shutout.

2A District Final - West Valley 5-4 East Valley
Things looked like they were going to go according to the seeding with East Valley getting goals from Kailee Hance-Brown in the fourth minute and Autumn Stewart in the 18th. Chelsea Koker, though, talled in the 36th and Frankie Schade converted a penalty two minutes later and - bam - it was even at the break. Gracie Montoya, who set up the opener, scored two minutes into the second half for the Knights, but Koker answered immediately with an equalizer three minutes later, sparking a three-goal run from the Eagles. Schade netted her second in the 52nd minute to put WV in the lead for the first time and three minutes later Morgan Riojas gave them some needed insurance. Kaitlin Harvey converted a penalty for the hosts with two minutes left, but EV was unable to find an equalizer.
