College Notebook 11.21.18: CCC Sides Sweep NAIA Tourney Openers

The big story of last week came out of the Cascade Collegiate Conference yet again as all five teams, including the fifth-place season finisher Northwest University women, advanced to the championship events in California and Alabama the week of November 26 to December 1. On the flip side of matters, the postseason runs for nearly all of the other programs and players from the region came to an end last week with a few exceptions. Notably still in action is Camryn Wendlandt's (Coeur d'Alene, ID) Baylor Bears while the Portland Pilots, featuring RJ Stretch (Spokane, WA), were knocked out after winning their opener.

NOTE: Before we delve into the Notebook, just a quick note that the next and final College Best XI and Player of the Week selections will be released in a few weeks, covering performances from last week through the remainder of the postseason.

NCAA DI TOURNAMENT - Bracket

Second Round

11.16 Washington State 0-1 Georgetown :: The second-ranked Hoyas, one of two unbeaten sides in the nation, scored 10 minutes into the contest and limited the Cougars to just five shots in the game to preserve the shutout.

11.16 North Carolina State 1-1 (5-4 SO) Santa Clara (@ UCLA) :: Maria Sanchez (American Falls, ID) at the hour mark, but the visitors were able to pull even in the 78th and eventually prevailed in the shootout with a Bronco player missing wide left in the final shot of the tiebreaker, ending the season for the seventh-ranked side.

11.16 Vanderbilt 1-3 Baylor :: Baylor scored five minutes in on a corner, but another header nine minutes later at the other end evened things up. In the second half though the Bears scored in the 53rd and 74th to advance. Camryn Wendlandt (Coeur d'Alene, ID) had several chances in the game, including two shots on goal against the 13th-ranked Commodores.

11.18 Virginia 1-2 Baylor :: Wendlandt again had several chances denied, but the Bears continued their postseason run with another victory against a ranked opponent. Similar to the match two days earlier, they took the lead six minutes in but saw it negated 11 minutes later for a tied score at the break. Wendlandt, though, was a key figure in the game-winning goal in the 54th against the 12th-ranked Cavaliers, making a run up the middle of the pitch on a counter and feeding Raegan Padgett on the wing to serve a cross into the box for the finish from Kennedy Brown. The Bears will now face unbeaten, second-ranked Georgetown in the quarterfinals in Washington DC Saturday.

Third Round

11.16 3-Western Washington 0-0 (1-4 SO) 1-UC San Diego :: The season came to a close for Darby Doyle (Spokane, WA) and the 16th-ranked Vikings. They held the sixth-ranked Tritons off the board by limiting them to just three shots on target but things went wrong in the shootout tiebreaker with misses in the second and third rounds allowing the hosts to advance by converting with the first shot of the fourth round.

First Round - Saturday, November 17

Northwest 1-0 (OT) 5-Vanguard :: Makenna Wheeler got her head to the service from Jaclyn Metz in the fourth minute of overtime to stun the fifth-ranked hosts continuing the surprising run for the Eagles, who finished fifth in the league and earned their spot in the NAIA tournament by winning the CCC postseason title. The Eagles had to survive a second half in which the California school outshot them 13-6 and then tallied on their first shot by either side in extra time.

Eastern Oregon 2-1 15-Grace :: Taylor Boyer scored just over three minutes into the contest with a fantastic effort from outside the area, and Alexendria Cuaresma found Kaitlyn McLeod for what proved to be the game-winner in the 38th as the 15th-ranked hosts would make things interesting with a penalty in the 83rd. The 20th-ranked Mountaineers, though, would hold on to register their first-ever victory in the NAIA tournament.

Hope International 2-3 (OT) 9-Embry-Riddle AU :: A trio of Washington natives would play a role in the victory, but the play of Riley Martinson (Deer Park, WA) was huge as her efforts erased a two-goal deficit the visitors grabbed in the opening 25 minutes. Martinson made an amazing run from just outside the Eagles' own box through several defenders until she was ultimately fouled in the area for a penalty that would be converted by fellow Washingtonian Maddy Mak in the 28th to close the gap. The game would drag on but with just under three minutes remaining a ball over the top to Martinson led to the equalizer as she held off a defender before slipping the ball to the other Washingtonian Ashley Askevold to even it up. ERAU would get the game-winner five minutes into overtime to avoid the upset and book a trip to Alabama.

NAIA TOURNAMENT - Bracket    Schedule

First Round - Saturday, November 17

Rocky Mountain 3-2 6-Hastings :: Pablo Ferreira put the Bears up just 43 seconds into the match with a penalty and 40 minutes later Sky Swenson connected with Marco Kummerle to give RMC a surprise two goal lead on the road at the break against the sixth-ranked Broncos. The hosts would cut the deficit just two minutes into the second half only to see Swenson restore the two goal margin and eventually go up two men as well as Hastings saw players sent off with red cards in the 59th and 71st minutes. The hosts would still manage to create some drama with a late goal with four minutes remaining, but the Battlin Bears held on to hand the Broncos their first home loss to advance to a tough contest against tournament host Vanguard, which had a bye in the first round.

UC-Merced 0-1 (OT) 13-Southern Oregon :: The Raiders controlled the contest with an 18-5 advantage in shots, but it was a bit of fortune that put them through to the second round with a corner kick deflecting in for an own goal just over five minutes into overtime for the win, maintaining their NAIA leading 20-game unbeaten streak. They will now face fourth-seed Rio Grande, which currently is the top ranked side in the coaches' poll.

Arizona Christian 2-3 (OT) 15-Corban :: In a back-and-forth affair in which Corban outshot the visitors 33-19, the Warriors took the lead twice before prevailing in overtime. Wade Coetzee scored off a second chance opportunity 32 minutes in but the Firestorm answered six minutes later. In the second half a corner put away by Alex Segovia in the 73rd was equalized 11 minutes later by the visitors to force overtime where Alan Ramirez tapped in a chance off a corner at the 99 minute mark.
