HS UPDATE 11.7.18: Area Schools Nearly Sweep In First Set of First Round Games

It was a great night for the Spokane area and MCC schools in the First Round of State Tournament action as they pair of GSL and MCC schools both won and the trio from the Northeast A League swept their games in dominant fashion, outscoring their opponents 21-4. The only side to slip up was East Valley, which was never able to come back from an early deficit at home.

##  4A / 3A PLAYOFFS  ##

3A - Peninsula 0-5 Kamiakin :: It looked like things were going to go to the break scoreless when the Braves busted things open with a pair of goals with five minutes remaining. Izzy Conover, battling with a defender down the right side, cut back and delivered a cross to the middle of the area that Maddie Morgan first-timed past the keeper with a defender on her shoulder. Just three minutes later Morgan got the ball from Conover in the midfield and drove through the attacking third to finish with a blast into the roof of the goal. Four minutes into the second half she completed the hat-trick when Kaeri Ward drove down the middle and delivered a shot that was blocked and popped well up in the air toward the left. As it dropped Morgan was right there to put it inside the near post. Sarah Ensign would one-time a ball from Emma Johnson on the left to push the lead to four and Morgan capped the game with a fourth nine minutes from time. With the contest being a blowout it could be easy to overlook the Braves defense has not allowed a goal now in eight consecutive games.

4A - Sumner 0-1 Gonzaga Prep :: Facing a side that finished 4-1-3 in the SPSL and came into the game having only allowed six goals in league and postseason action, it was going to be a tough task for the Bullpups and it proved to be just that. Both sides had some good play in the first half but the defense for both extremely limited the quality of the scoring chances. In the second half, though, the Bullpups began to grab further control of matters as time progressed and with just over three minutes remaining they finally got their one chance to snare the victory. It was yet again Chelsea Le as she rose to nod in a ball that narrowly slipped past the outstretched hand of the keeper at the edge of the six off a diagonal cross from Sammy Symmes from the left side.

## Great Northern League ##

2A - Burlington-Edison 3-2 East Valley :: An own goal 19 minutes in left the Knights playing catch-up, which was made more difficult by Tigers striker Moira MacKay, who doubled the lead in the 34th. Kaitlin Harvey tallied two minutes later, but MacKay added a second in the 60th that proved critical as Chloe Gellhaus' strike in the 78th was all the Knights could muster in a rally attempt as they forced a dozen saves from the visiting keeper on the night.

##  Northeast A League  ##

1A - Cle Elum 3-11 Deer Park :: The Lady Stags grabbed an early three goal lead from three different players in the opening 15 minutes, but Grace Jackson and Grace Terrill were a tough duo to deal with for the visiting Warriors. Terrill tallied back-to-back goals to make the difference one again, but Hannah Carnahan copied her with tallies in the 23rd and 25th to push it back to three. In the second half Livvy Moore would do the same to complete a hat-trick and after another Terrill goal Carnahan made it two hat-tricks for Deer Park to one for the Warriors in the rout. Jessie Thomas was not exactly quiet, though, in the match, finishing with a pair of goals and three assists. Emmy Moore, meanwhile, only finished with a pair of assists in an 11-goal game, a rarity in which her younger sister proved to be the bigger scoring star on the night.

1A - Lakeside 6-1 Warden :: The Eagles grabbed control of the game five minutes into the contest via Lexi Torok and doubled the advantage eight minutes before the break courtesy of Alyssa Conley. According to Columbia Basin Herald editor Connor Vanderweyst the hosts lost star defender Cathy Mendoza late in the first half. It showed as Lakeside rattled off four goals in a nine-minute span from the 50th to 59th. Torok scored two of them to finish with a hat-trick and an assist.

1A - Highland 0-4 Freeman :: In a one-sided affair Brynn Van Orden opened the scoring when she beat a defender on the right side and struck from an acute angle with a lofted ball inside the far post. She turned provider for the second, delivering a cross that Riley Hawley nodded home. Delaney Lamotte, who had one goal on the season, notched her second of the postseason two minutes after the break on a ball Lindsay Balkenbush collected on a corner. Peyton Brewer created the final goal in the 65th with a shot that rebounded off the crossbar to Abby Pylant to finish off the first win in the program history in the state tournament.

"I'm happy for the girls, and for the Freeman soccer program.  This was the first state cup win in school history, so it means a lot to the players," said head coach Dave Ellis. "On top of that, centerback Kylie Nelson had ACL surgery today, and the team came together to dedicate the game to her.  Despite missing most of the season, she has been one of the most supporting and positive members of this team.

The girls came in to today's game hungry and focused.  They maintained possession throughout the match, and were patient when building the play up.  Defensively we were organized and composed, led by centerbacks Cheyenne Groat and Macy Luhr.  In five playoff games this year, they have only allowed a total of one goal.  An excellent team effort by all."
