INW DI College Recap – Week Five: Montana Sweeps Big Sky openers; WSU Cougars grab late win in Pac-12 opener

Among the Division I action this week, the Big Sky Conference, PAC-12 and Mountain West kicked of conference play. The University of Montana and University of Idaho each swept their first two with victories while Idaho State and Eastern Washington each split on the weekend. Washington State snared a PAC-12 win at Oregon State in the 89th minute. Things were not so fortunate for Boise State, which dropped its first two in the Mountain West, falling on the road to Air Force and Colorado College. This week conference play will finally begin for Gonzaga and the West Coast Conference.

Here is a rundown of the area DI schools and their conferences as well as how players from the Inland Northwest performed around the nation in the past week.

BIG SKY CONFERENCE

Friday, September 26

Idaho State 2-1 (OT) Eastern Washington
The Eagles nearly took the lead in the 16th minute when Savannah Hoekstra (Liberty Lake, WA) was fouled in the box, but Sheridan Hapsic stopped the penalty attempt from Chloe Williams (Spokane, WA). Three minute later, though, they did get the opening goal with Williams scoring on a ball from Hoekstra. Eastern held the advantage until Katherine Roberts (Pocatello, ID) rebounded from a poor start, dominating the second half en route to an 80th minute equalizer and, eventually, the game-winner with just under three minutes left in overtime. Both were set up by good work from teammates with Lauren Bermudez beating a defender on the end line to serve the ball in for the first and Whitney Peterson (Meridian, ID) beat a defender and showed persistence to serve the ball in after the initial attempt was deflected.  EWU MORE [+] - ISU MORE [+]

Weber State 0-1 Univ of Montana
The Grizzlies outshot Weber State 14-4 as they controlled the match, but it was a little fortune that gave them the win as a cross from Chloe Torres in the 19th minute slightly overshot Hallie Widner (Meridian, ID), but came back to her off the defender to allow her to put it away from about eight yards out. Kailey Norman made two saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Northern Colorado 2-3 Univ of Idaho
It was an eventful second half with the Vandals grabbing a two-goal lead, but needed a third for the win after the visitors rallied. After a scoreless first half in which they outshot UNCO 7-3, the hosts grabbed the advantage in the first four minutes courtesy of Alyssa Pease (Bend, OR). She found Olivia Baggerly in the 48th minute and combined with Alyssa Lloyd (Spokane, WA) to set up Gabby Leong for the second a minute later. The visitors rallied with goals in the 58th and 71st, but Chloe Bell connected with Kavita Battan in the 78th for the winner.  MORE [+]

Weber State 1-5 Eastern Washington
Things look tough with Weber State scoring 12 minutes in, but a blasted shot from about 25 yards by Williams changed everything as the Eagles equalized in the 29th and then used two quick goals back-to-back in the second half to grab command. Williams delivered a corner in the 47th that Kiana Hafferty tapped in and Hoekstra set up Cassie Black two minutes later to double the lead. Black then returned the factor in the 56th with a through ball that Hoekstra scored on from the top of the box. Black added a second in the 75th, beating the keeper one-on-one after receiving the ball from Haley Stading and pushing the Eagles to the five-goal total for only the second time in program history. North Dakota 0-1 Univ of Idaho
It was a good day for Vandal goalkeeper Torrell Stewart. Her punt in the 21st minute found Kavita Battan, who beat the UND defense and chipped the ball over the keeper from the top of the area. After that she finished the game with three saves for the shutout.  MORE [+]

Sacramento State 0-1 Northern Arizona
Defender Ashlynn Curnow (Boise, ID) helped guide the Lumberjacks to the narrow victory on a 67th minute goal.

Idaho State 1-3 Montana
The Grizzlies took the initial lead just over seven minutes into the contest when Widner received the ball inside the box from Mackenzie Akins and stuck it inside the right post. A defensive turnover, allowed, the Bengals to pull even in the 18th. Five minutes before the break Maddy Emerick (Billings, MT) put a cross from Savannah Witt (Billings, MT) inside the right post to reclaim the lead and Widner added some insurance in the 77th from about 12 yards via Chloe Torres.  UM MORE [+] - ISU MORE [+]
