The playoff runs for several hopefuls teams in the area, unfortunately, came to an end this past week. Most notably was the Whitworth men, who lost in a hard-fought Sweet 16 contest of their own while the Rocky Mountain College men were knocked out in their opening round NAIA match. Here's a quick round-up of the area schools, players from the INWsn region and a couple other scores for teams around the northwest.

Third Round - Sunday, November 23 (@ Kenyon College | OH)
Whitworth University 2-3 Christopher Newport
Originally slated for Saturday, the 12th-ranked Pirates saw the first of two potential back-to-back games pushed back to early Sunday morning (Pacific time) in Ohio. It certainly didn't hurt the effort behind their attack as they outshot the 17th-ranked Captains 13-5 in the first half. The nation's fifth-best offense, though, took advantage of their few chances and scored in the 12th and 17th to grab a strong advantage. Karl Muelheims (Spokane, WA) scored from inside the box in the 37th to cut into the deficit. Aside from Muelheims' goal, the Pirates were denoted by goalkeeper Sam Lesko, who made a handful of great stops, and the crossbar, which denied Austin Cassity's header in the 45th. Seven minutes into the second half the Captains restored the two-goal margin and held on, limiting the chances for the Bucs, who were reduced to 10 men following a second yellow to defensive captain Matt Bray (Spokane, WA) in the 68th but still managed to push matters with a goal from Colin Shockman (Spokane, WA) on a rebound in the 71st. Christopher Newport would be knocked out the following day on penalties after a 2-2 draw with 14th-ranked Ohio Wesleyan, who upset sixth-ranked weekend host Kenyon 2-0. MORE [+]
