Spokane's Mykines scores for Reign; Shine's Schrader among Sounders Women hopeful

Former Spokane Shadow and Mead High School product Marissa Mykines made a bit of a splash in Wednesday for the new professional NWSL side Seattle Reign in a preseason international friendly, scoring the second goal in a 3-1 victory against Fukuoka J Anclas.

The University of Illinois award-winning striker joined the club as part of an initially unidentified foursome of trialists that accompanied the team of 18 identified players (listed below) to Japan for a preseason camp and exhibition tour. The Reign kicked things off with a six-day camp in Okinawa before suffering a 2-0 defeat against INAC Kobe Leonessa over the weekend.
Mykines

Mykines did not start the first contest, but was placed in the starting 11 in Fukuoka for the second. Supplemental draftee Laura Heyboer notched the team's first-ever tally with Mykines and Liz Bogus adding the other two goals in the win.

The team now returns to Okinawa with a final game this weekend against Nojima Stell Kanagawa

With three strikers already under contract, plus expected signee Heyboer, Mykines is an outside chance of making the roster courtesy of Amy Rodriguez being pregnant, but the club will also be looking to shore up the goalkeeper position due to Hope Solo's recent wrist surgery and extended recovery time.

If Mykines does not make the NWSL roster, the former GSL Offensive MVP could very well join the newly named, via partnership, Reign Reserves presented by Issaquah SC, the rival WPSL club of the Spokane Shine.

Sounders Women Trial Update

Schrader
Standout Spokane Shine defender Maggie Schrader was among a group of players from the recent Seattle Sounders Women trials that have been invited back for further evaluation by the W-League club.

According to the team's Executive Director Jon Billings, "She is a part of a pool of players that we will be asking back for an extended trial with the club. She was impressive, as were about a dozen unsigned trialists, at last weekend's Open Tryouts. She will have the opportunity to work her way onto the team and combine with recruited squad members from around the nation as the spring progresses into the W-League season."

Schrader, a Lakewood, Wash. native that played for Incarnate Word in Texas, was the leader of a Shine back line that helped lead Spokane to the regular season WPSL Northwest Division title last summer, allowing just seven goals in 10 games as they went 6-2-2.

Also among the players invited back is Yakima native and former 2003-06 Gonzaga defender Beth Russell (nee Drollinger), a previous Sounders Women player. It is also believed that Sheridan Jones, another Gonzaga product, was invited back. The midfielder was a three-time All-WCC honoree during her GU career (2007-10).
