Spring schedules under way for Idaho trio

The three Division I universities in Idaho are in the midst of their schedule of spring friendlies and training, highlighted by the recent meeting between Boise State and Idaho State last weekend. The University of Idaho plays its first match March 23.

The reigning Big Sky champion ISU Bengals kicked things off February 23 at the BYU Indoor Tournament, posting a 0-0 draw against Utah Valley University and falling 2-1 against Dixie. Utah native Laura Benson prevented a scoreless trip to Provo with a goal five minutes from time.

Boise State, meanwhile, played to a 1-1 draw against Washington State University March 3. The Broncos, playing under new coach Jim Thomas for the first time, took the lead (scoring details not available), but saw the Cougars answer for the equalizer via Kayla Johnson off on a play set up by Korynn Blanksma (Wenatchee, WA) and Micaela Castain.

The Broncos again took the lead last weekend against their in-state foes (details not available) only to see Idaho State rally for the 2-1 win away from home. Boise State took the initial lead in the contest only to see it erased approximately a minute later when Madeline Gochnour put away a corner kick. The Bengals quickly claimed the lead when Mikaela Carrillo and Laura Benson connected to find Rachel Strawn for a header.

Idaho State will continue to play a Utah-heavy spring schedule, making another trip across the border to play BYU and Utah Valley in Provo April 13 and venturing to Salt Lake City a week later to square off with Utah State and Utah.

Boise State has only one more friendly on the slate, versus Northwest Nazarene, along with an alumni match.

The University of Idaho opens things up against North Idaho College and plays host to Central Washington University two weeks later. The following day they host a 7-v-7 alumni event followed by a match against Walla Walla Community College. With the Vandals wrapping up their spring schedule early, they will not be returning to the Gonzaga 7-v-7 event they previously participated in.
