INW DI College Recap – Week Ten: Boise State wins finale, kicks off postseason Tuesday

Look out Mountain West. The Broncos of Boise State are on a roll. After giving up five combined goals in two losses to open the conference campaign, the team's outstanding defense regained its form and has allowed just three goals since then in seven games, capping the run on Halloween with its fourth consecutive win via a shutout performance. The Broncos' will be a scary sixth seed to face in the Mountain West Conference tournament, which begins with the first round Tuesday afternoon in San Diego, where it will continue with semifinals Thursday and championship Saturday.

Meanwhile, it was a tough week for Washington State and Gonzaga. The Cougars were swept by the visiting schools from Los Angeles. The Gonzaga men went without a goal at home, falling to San Diego and getting a draw against Loyola Marymount. The lady Zags rebounded from another loss to the Sofia Huerta (Boise, ID) led Santa Clara Broncos with the lone bright spot for the trio with a win at San Francisco.

MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE

Friday, October 31

Utah State 0-1 Boise State
Having lost all six previous games on Halloween, the Broncos needed to finally come up with a treat in order to ensure a postseason berth with two teams chasing them for the final spot in the tournament. Locked in a stalemate with the fifth-place Aggies, Kayla Tucker and Dani Brown combined for a nice goal to decide the contest. After winning the ball in midfield, Tucker drove up the field with Brown mirroring her run to make it a two-on-one with the final defender, whose commitment to Tucker allowed the cross to set Brown up for a shot the keeper could only get a piece of as it found its way into the goal. Janelle Flores made four saves for the win, which proved critical as seventh-place San Jose State would have passed the Broncos had they lost.  MORE [+]

Friday, October 31

UCLA 1-0 Washington State
The top-ranked Bruins outshot the Cougars 23-6 on the day, but only eight of them ended up on goal. Gurveen Clair's rare bobble of the ball just over two minutes into the second half as she dove to smother it was followed by a deflection of a defender to set up the deciding goal.  MORE [+]

USC 1-0 Washington State
The Los Angeles duo made it a sweep of the Washington schools with stunning last minute goal - literally - with just 38 seconds left. The hosts outshot USC 12-8 and Clair only needed to make two saves until that final moment when defender Susie White lost a 50-50 battle for the ball in the box and Clair was subsequently beat for the win.  MORE [+]

Sofia Huerta (Boise, ID) has long been a nemesis for the Zags. The bad news was that with two more goals she boosted her scoring tally to five goals and three assists in the last three years against the Bulldogs. The good news is it was the last time they will see the senior Bronco. She doubled the hosts lead with a shot from the right side of the box a minute before the intermission and put the match out of reach on a breakaway in the 74th.  MORE [+]
