INW DII-III College Recap – Week Eleven: Whitworth men win NWC; Boise duo lead Redlands to surprise title

Among the Division II action this week in the GNAC, the MSU-Billings and Central Washington women were both knocked out in the semifinals of the conference tournament while Northwest Nazarene blanked MSUB on the men's side to finish the season prior to their invitation Monday to the NCAA tournament.

Meanwhile, in the Northwest Conference the Whitworth men held onto their recently re-acquired top spot in the conference by blanking Whitman to secure the league championship and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Outside of the region, a pair of Spokane players helped lead the back line of New Mexico Highlands on a run in the Division II RMAC tournament and Division III program University of Redlands surprised everyone, capturing the title as the fourth seed in their conference tournament thanks to the play of a pair of players from Boise.

Here is a rundown of the area schools and their conferences as well as how players from the Inland Northwest performed around the nation in the past week.

After posting a scoreless draw in Bellingham that snapped the Vikings' 20-game home win streak in their last meeting, the Wildcats were looking for more of the same magic, but came up short. The Vikings took the lead on a scramble in the box 24 minutes in and held the advantage until the 74th. Keilin Farrand (Ellensburg, WA) curled a 20-yard cross from the right side that ended up swerving over the keeper and inside the far side netting instead to even things up. Northwest Nazarene 3-0 MSU-Billings
Fredy Razo dominated the contest, scoring twice in the first 14 minutes for the Crusaders on balls from Michael Mollay (Boise, ID) and Steven Garcia (Meridian, ID) and then completed the hat-trick in the second half. Five minutes in Garcia sent a ball into the box that Mollay, as goalkeeper Tom Lohmann came off his line, heeled to the onrushing Razo. Nine minutes later Garcia sent a ball over the back line that Razo collected before beating three defenders inside the area and placing it into the far back corner of the goal. Razo used his head for the final tally, heading in a cross at the six on a delivery from Marshall Hartley out of the left corner, beating reserve keeper Joe Scott (Edwall, WA). Ryan Foo made four saves for the shutout with Alfredo Ontiveros and several other regular starters receiving rest in the game.  NNU MORE [+] - MSUB MORE [+]

DIVISION III NOTES

On a play started by midfielder Summer Norquist (Boise, ID), the University of Redlands got their game-winner when a shot from Savannah Laursen (Boise, ID) was put away on the rebound of the save for a 1-0 win over top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Athenas Wednesday in the semifinals of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). The two then combined with Norquist heading in a corner to pull even in a 1-1 draw in the championship game against second-seed Cal Lutheran, winning the title and advancing to the NCAA tournament 4-2 in a shootout (Laursen converted the second, Norquist the fourth of the four rounds needed). They will face 18th-ranked Hardin-Simmons in the First Round.
