Southeast WA HS Boys Update - May 12

Kennewick players celebrate winning their 3A District playoff title
District playoffs in the MCC spent the week in the midst of the district playoffs while the CBB9 wrapped up the regular season early in the week and kicked off its district postseason tournament over the weekend. In both cases, things played out according to seeding.

LEAGUE PLAY :: May 5 - 9

Mid-Columbia Conference - The week started off with the third and fourth seeds playing one another in each of the classifications. Hanford took care of business against MCC's last-place Southridge in 3A play with a pair of first half goals and a shutout from Jason Toth. Walla Walla, also 4-10 with Southridge, managed to upset Richland, however, in the 4A classification, taking the match in the tiebreaker shootout after a scoreless affair.

Walla Walla's run, though, came to an end Thursday in a 4-2 loss at Chiawana in which Jose Rodriguez scored twice and Shambel West had a goal and assist. The hosts were up three before Wa-Hi answered. Hanford nearly record an upset in Thursday's other contest, taking Kamiakin to overtime before falling on a strike from Brandon Boehnke, who scored the opener three minutes in before Hanford scored twice for the lead at the break.

On Saturday, both matches were again close, but finished in favor of the higher seeded hosts. Kennewick prevailed 1-0 to take the 3A title and Pasco held out for a 2-1 win on a pair of goals from Hector Magana. He tallied the opener and Chiawana answered before halftime with Jose Lucatero heading in a corner from Rodriguez. Magana was fouled on a breakaway, leading to his 50th minute penalty to give them the 4A crown.

Sunnyside prevailed at Eastmont in a shootout to take the second seed in the playoffs. Meanwhile, Wenatchee posted its 11th consecutive win, narrowly escaping defeat in Moses Lake with goals from three different players.

Eastmont went on to grab a stunning victory from the jaws of defeat in the opening round of the district tournament Saturday. Trailing 2-1 to sixth-seed Eisenhower, they got a goal from Emanuel Lopez in stoppage time to send the contest to overtime where a penalty gave them the win four minutes into the extra session. Moses Lake, looking again to snare an upset, came up short once more. A goal eight minutes into the second half from Samuel Rodriguez put Davis through to the second round.
