Southeast WA HS Boys Update - May 5

League play finished out over the past week for the Mid-Columbia Conference, which saw a complete mix between the 4A and 3A schools - a stark contrast from the Greater Spokane League. Meanwhile, Wenatchee locked up the top spot in the Columbia Basin Big 9, which has three teams battling for second going into the final few days of the season this week.

LEAGUE PLAY :: April 28 - May 2

Mid-Columbia Conference - With Pasco having locked up the regular season title and the seeding for the postseason relatively set within the classifications, the only thing really on the line for the final week of the season was order of finish within the league overall. In the end, though, nothing really changed. Three of the top five ended up being schools from the 3A classification with Kennewick finishing second to Pasco, which won the league by an amazing five-game difference with their perfect 14-0 campaign.

The unbeaten record was not easy though. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs only prevailed in a shootout tiebreaker after finishing in a 1-1 stalemate at fourth-place Kamiakin. The hosts got on the board through Brandon Boehnke seven minutes into the game and looked like they were going to play spoilers, but with nine minutes remaining Jesus Meraz-Rodriguez scored the equalizer on a ball from his brother Emilio. It was the 15th goal of the year for Jesus, who would add to more Saturday in a 4-0 win over Hanford, finishing as the league's leading scorer.

That was not the only close contest. In a season that has seen a number of one-sided contests, all four games Tuesday were tight with the three others each decided by one goal. Kennewick edged host Hanford with a pair of goals from Yasin Mohammed and Southridge won 2-1 at Walla Walla with goals from Jesse Macias and Alan Pena. Richland took third-place Chiawana to overtime before collecting the upset victory over the visitors with a pair of tallies from Paul Reisenauer.

Saturday's games were completely different with only one losing team getting on the board as four teams recorded shutouts. Among them was a scoreless stalemate between last-place Southridge against visiting Kamiakin. The host Rams took the decision in the tiebreaker.

Michael Raya
Eastmont had a tough task for the week, starting it off Tuesday with a showdown with Davis, which along with Sunnyside is among the trio bunched up behind Wenatchee battling for second.
