HS DAILY - 9.16.16: GNL & NEA kick off 2016 campaigns

In the first week of league play for the Great Northern League and Northeast A League three teams went unbeaten in their two contests. Cheney and East Valley sit atop the GNL and Medical Lake leads the NEA.

Cheney narrowly edged Clarkston Tuesday in the opener, 3-2, in a back-and-forth contest. Madison O'Callaghan gave them the lead but Makinzie Packwood scored two goals in seven minutes to put the Bantams in front in the 59th. Kailey Estrellado, however, gave the Blackhawks the win, quickly responding by finding Gabby Nguyen for the equalizer at the hour mark and scoring the winner two minutes from time. On Thursday, it was far less dramatic as Nicole Rowley led the team to a shutout win while three different players scored.

East Valley opened their campaign with a dominant performance at home against Pullman. Chloe Gellhaus set up the opener three minutes in by Micaela Verdal and then scored four minutes into the second half as the Knights rolled to the 4-0 victory. Clarkston again proved to be a tough beat Thursday, taking the Knights all the way to penalties before falling. Shannon Frucci, who scored Tuesday, tallied in the 15th and 19th for a commanding EV lead, but Packwood scored in the 50th and Kaela Southwick tied it up six minutes later. Gellhaus restored the Knights' lead in the 65th but four minutes later Packwood found Taylen Wohl for the equalizer.

In the NEA, Medical Lake edged Riverside 2-1 on Tuesday and Colville 3-1 Thursday with Makayla Geiger scoring all five goals. Jayda Noble set up both on Tuesday and the first on Thursday.

Geiger was not the only scoring sensation on the week as Kirsten Stickney tore it up Tuesday for Colville in a wild 4-3 win over Newport with the assistance of Keren Torres. Newport twice claimed the lead, but Stickney answered with equalizers set up by Torres and then put the Indians in front at hour mark when the two combined again. Newport, though, pulled even five minutes later only to see Torres strike for the winner in the 66th.

Freeman took a penalty decision against Lakeside Tuesday, 3-2. With Lakeside leading 2-1 at the break, Brynn Van Orden scored in the second half to even things up for the Scotties.

On Thursday, the Scotties were unable to make up a two-goal deficit in a 2-1 loss at Deer Park and Newport came up one goal short again in a 3-2 loss at Riverside in which Jamie Conner tallied two goals and an assist for the Rams.
