HS Update 5.03.18: Walla Walla Lone Underdog to Win Wednesday

It was nearly a clean sweep for the higher seeded home teams in a busy day of GSL versus MCC action with Walla Walla posting the lone upset with a 4-3 victory against GSL runner-up Ferris.

The results left Lewis & Clark as the lone GSL team remaining in the winners portion of the bracket vying for the 4A regional title. In the 3A bracket the league runners-up both advanced to square off against the opposing leagues' top 3A sides for a spot in the regional final.

Chiawana 0-2 Lewis & Clark
The Riverhawks kept the game close for most of the affair, but a pair of balls put Will Hoefer and Gabe Keller behind the back line for finishes on the two goals. John Zylak and Nicholas Davis shared the clean sheet. The Tigers advanced to host Richland in the next round. It is the third consecutive year they will face the Bombers in the postseason, having won the last two 2-1 and 2-0. SWX Highlights [+]

Walla Walla 4-3 Ferris
In a wild back-and-forth affair the Saxons held the initial lead after just one minute, but the Blue Devils scored back-to-back goals in the 32nd and 36th with Juan Montero setting up both. Nathan Owen, though, would level things right before the break. Julio Tapia, who netted the equalizer, would strike twice in three minutes early in the second half to complete a hat-trick. Ferris made things interesting when a scramble in the six off a corner in the 79th tightened things for stoppage time. SWX Highlights [+]

Central Valley 0-4 Pasco
The MCC champs scored early via Kevin Meraz-Rodriguez, who tallied twice, and held control the rest of the contest, pulling away in the final 18 minutes of the match for the big win, the first decisive victory for the Bulldogs in their recent postseason series. The two sides had squared off six times in the playoffs the last four years with the Bears winning all but one, a state tournament match that went to a shootout last year after a 2-2 draw. Francisco Moreno and Danny Puga combined for the shutout and Isaac Ponce had a pair of assists.

A goal just before the break put the Braves in front, but a narrow-angled near post goal two minutes into the second half evened things up. Kamiakin, though, had too much firepower and pulled away over the next 20 minutes.
