HS Update 5.13.18: Walla Walla, Kamiakin Advance to State

The Mid-Columbia Conference secured two more berths to the state tournament with Walla Walla claiming the third spot at the 4A classification and Kamiakin earning the second in 3A, giving the MCC four of the five from the two flights. Both teams won handily on the road to earn the berths. In the lower tiers, Clarkston earned its first trip to state and East Valley joined them as the GNL saw three total move on.

4A GSL & MCC PLAYOFFS

Walla Walla 3-1 Richland

The Blue Devils grabbed the lead on a long ball forward out of midfield that Juan Montero touched past the keeper in the box off the bounce. Two minutes later Julio Tapia drove into the box and after the initial stop from Jake Voordeport put away the rebound for a two goal advantage at the break. Montero would turn provider for the third, setting up Nathan Hughes as the Blue Devils cruised to the win with Kyle Beaumier, spoiling the shutout for Angel Montero. Juan Montero finished the regional tourney with two goals and three assists while Tapia netted four goals.

3A GSL & MCC PLAYOFFS

Kamiakin 5-1 North Central

Frustrated from losing in penalties a week ago at SFCC, the Braves took control of matters in the opening seconds, literally. Christian Anguiano scored just 18 seconds into the contest and then Miguel Vargas pushed the lead to two in the third minute. Dominic Deatherage kept the game close with a tally in the 23rd and North Central could have pulled even, but a penalty from Marcus Abdel Malek was stopped by Jorge Mungia. Caden Egli put the game out of reach for the MCC side with a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes of the second half and Anguiano netted his second to cap the game. Anguiano and Egli both finished the regional tourney with three goals.

In the crossover contests with the CWAC, the Great Northern League snatched the additional two state berths with Clarkston and East Valley joining Pullman in the tourney.

East Valley (Yakima) 1-2 Clarkston

Second out of the GNL, the Bantams used a pair of early goals at home to take control in the contest. Theodore Baiye tallied in the seventh and Nicholas Noland added what proved to be the winner 10 minutes later. The victory gave Clarkston its first-ever appearance in the state tournament for the boys soccer program.

East Valley 2-0 Selah
It was a rough postseason for the Vikings, who captured the regular season CWAC title with an 8-1 record. In the last game and a half they saw Toppenish rally to win the district title and send Selah into the crossovers, and then on Saturday they were knocked out of the playoffs entirely by the visiting Eagles. East Valley scored once in each half as they grabbed the final berth into the state tournament.
