HS Update 5.08.18: North Central Survives Shootout as Top Seeds Move On

The four one-seeds all advanced to their respective 3A and 4A regional championship games this weekend. On a busy Saturday it was relatively easy work for 4A sides Pasco and Lewis & Clark while North Central needed a shootout after a scoreless draw against Kamiakin to move on. Kennewick had already booked their spot on Friday with a romp against Mt Spokane.

4A GSL & MCC PLAYOFFS

Richland 0-3 Lewis & Clark
Will Hoefer snapped his head back for a glancing header of a well-paced diagonal ball in from the right side by Lewis Barbe eight minutes in to give the Tigers control in the match. Twelve minutes later Bryan Maxwell rose to get his head on a Jared Mehaffey corner to give them full command. The Bombers fought back with some opportunities, but were unable to get anything past John Zylak and Nicholas Davis. Bailey Rosenau put the match out of range seven minutes into the second half.
LC: Will Hoefer (Lewis Barbe) 8
LC: Bryan Maxwell (Jared Mehaffey) 20
LC: Bailey Rosenau (Gabe Keller) 47

Central Valley 1-2 (OT) Ferris [elimination match]
The Bears' struggle over the past few weeks continued as the Saxons registered another comeback victory - their third in the last five games. Ty Spink scored early in the second half with the two going the rest of the way deadlocked at one each. Overtime, though, was short-lived with leading scorer Caden Martin finding LaQuann Crump for the winner two minutes in. Two weeks ago, the pair played to a matching result in league play.
CV: Conner Wold (Noah Dreves) 20
F: Ty Spink (Evan Giem) 46
F: LaQuann Crump (Caden Martin) 82

Chiawana 0-1 (SO) Gonzaga Prep [elimination match]
Stuck in a scoreless stalemate, Isaiah Damschen made a key save to keep the game level late in the match and then stopped a Riverhawks penalty in the tiebreaker to keep the Bullpups alive in the second chance portion of the bracket.
Shutouts: Isaiah Damschen (GP) & Artemio Zepada (CHI)
Shootout 5-4

Walla Walla 0-3 Pasco
Edwin Aquino, Joey Esquival Rodriguez and Armando Nieblas scored for the Bulldogs in the win with Oscar Cortez setting up two. Frank Mareno and Danny Puga once again shared the shutout performance.

3A GSL & MCC PLAYOFFS

5/4 - Mt Spokane 0-5 Kennewick
A pair of free kicks from Jairo Villasenor and Joel Garcia in the first half got the ball rolling for the Lions. In the second half Eddie Castillo put the match away by adding two more tallies to his ledger for the season.
K: Jairo Villasenor 21
K: Joel Garcia 38
K: Eddie Castillo 46
K: Emir Velic 64
K: Eddie Castillo 68
Shutout: Alexander Flannery

Kamiakin 0-1 (SO) North Central
In a contest that smelled of a scoreless draw throughout, the two black-and-red clad sides were locked in the stalemate through regulation and overtime, bringing on a thriller of a shootout. After the first three calmly converted, the fourth round proved to be interesting. A shot from Kamiakin was reached by Ruff, but the ball went off the underside of the bar and crossed the line. Then on the following attempt from North Central the Braves keeper Jorge Mungia thought he made the denial, but the ball squirted through his hands and by the slimmest of margins rolled over the line before he could pounce back on it. A save from Ruff at the right post on the next shot allowed NC star Aidan Chaparro to send the top GSL 3A seed onto the regional final on the final shot [Shootout LIVE LOOK IN on Facebook]. Josh Ruff recorded the shutout for North Central while Mungia and Yonata Andrade combined for Kamiakin.
Shutout: Josh Ruff (NC)
Shootout: 5-4

Great Northern League (+ CWAC) / Northeast A League

Clarkston took care of business with a narrow shootout win against Cheney and a tight 1-0 victory against East Valley to get another crack at Pullman in the district final. Pullman dominated league play with a 10-2 record, but the Bantams handed them one of their two losses in the final week of play in a 4-1 result. The top seeds for the GNL crossover peers in the CWAC, Selah and Toppenish, each also advanced to their district final, although top-seeded Selah held off the fourth seed Grandview for a one-goal decision.

They always say facing an opponent three times is dangerous. That adage proved to be bad news for Medical Lake as Colville picked up a narrow 1-0 road win against the Cardinals after suffering 3-0 and 2-0 losses during the season, including the season finale in Colville. Lakeside, not surprisingly, cruised to another lopsided win.

STATS

Final regular season stats are being updated - Should be posted in next update.
PARENTS... Last Chance!! - Waiting to hear back from EAST VALLEY, PULLMAN, COLVILLE, LAKESIDE, MEDICAL LAKE, RIVERSIDE, NW CHRISTIAN for missing items - quite a few goals in some cases - so feel free to give those coaches a nudge to help out as INWsn has attempted to reach them. I really hesitate to suggest it, but continued non-response may result in dropping coverage of the GNL and NEA starting next fall.
