NWAC East Update 10.14.19: The Walla Walla Conundrum Continues

Aside from Friday's two contests, goals were a hard thing to come by in a tight set of matches for the men this week as two went scoreless and another two were 1-0 affairs. At the end of the day Spokane was still unbeaten and Walla Walla - somehow - still winless.

On the women's side a tough week for Yakima Valley allowed Columbia Basin to move into second and Spokane third in what is turning into an exciting race for second in the NWAC East as unbeaten Walla Walla holds a five-point lead despite dropping their first points of the season to the Yaks on Wednesday. Climbing into that race was North Idaho with a pair of wins as the foursome sit within a four point span of one another.

Wednesday

W - Wenatchee Valley 1-2 Columbia Basin... The Hawks grabbed the lead 10 minutes in when Bailey Whitney (Warden, WA) found Rebecca Wheeler for the opening goal, but the Hawks found themselves in a tough situation 10 minutes later when Danielle Chang was sent off. The Knights tied things up in the 52nd minute through Yalina Vargas (Brewster, WA) on the side's lone shot on target in the contest. CBC, however, reclaimed the lead in the 68th via Alyssa Lovell courtesy of Cassidie Andrews, and held on for the win.

W - Yakima Valley 1-1 Walla Walla... Aubree Skone (Warden, WA) connected with Eileen Reyna to give the Warriors the lead five minutes before intermission. In the second half Makayla Higbee (Rathdrum, ID) struck for the Yaks, who were able to keep the Warriors off the board the rest of the way, taking the first points of the season off of Walla Walla.

Friday

W - Treasure Valley 0-2 North Idaho... Sophia Schnepf (Rathdrum, ID) scored back-to-back goals in the 56th and 57th minute - the second coming from Maya Lewis - to give the Cardinals the victory. Kaysha Bailey (Lewiston, ID) made seven saves for NIC in earning the clean sheet.

W - Blue Mountain 0-6 Spokane... Lizzy Gonzalez (Caldwell, ID) scored the first two with Megan Wilkinson (Pasco, WA) finding her for the first in the fifth minute and Frankie Schade (Spokane, WA) the second in the 26th. Schade then netted two for herself in the 51st and 60th with Gonzalez returning the favor on the first. Morgan Skone (Moses Lake, WA) and Leah Kincaid (Spokane, WA) capped the scoring in the final 10 minutes as Brianna Krygier (Spokane, WA) closed out the one save shutout.

Saturday

W - Blue Mountain 0-2 North Idaho... Another key performance from Schnepf as she put away a ball from Sydney Moore (Spokane, WA) in the 29th for the lead and later found Halley Marschall (Yakima, WA) for the second in the 53rd minute. Hailey Mize (Caldwell, ID) claimed the shutout with two saves.

W - Wenatchee Valley 1-2 Walla Walla... Coming off their first dropped points, the Warriors got a bit of a scare as the Knights grabbed the early lead through Emilie Tangeman (Spokane, WA) in the 15th minute. Lyndsey Ellingsen (Pasco, WA), though, found Jessica Maher (Richland, WA) in the 37th for the equalizer and then Emmy Williams (Middleton, ID) struck in the 73rd for the game-winner.

W - Yakima Valley 0-1 Columbia Basin... Minus a suspended Chang, the Hawks scrapped out the narrow win to move to second in the table, getting the game-winner three minutes into the second half from Whitney on an assist from Megan Haugen (Richland, WA). RiaJo Schwartz (Wapato, WA) was also key in the victory with eight saves in goal for the shutout.

W - Treasure Valley 0-6 Spokane... For the second consecutive day Gonzalez scored the opening two goals. Wilkinson found her for the first in the seventh and Skone in the 16th. Caitlin Hopkins (Spokane, WA) got on the board in the 26th and Wilkinson closed out the first half by finding Skone in the 41st and scoring one of her own in the 44th. Skone added a second goal in the 71st as Mikayla Ramirez finished out a quiet day with one save.   PHOTOS [+]   VIDEO [+]

Will Kokernak (Lewiston, ID) struck in the 31st with a header and Flugel finished out the scoring via Greyden Lee (Rathdrum, ID) at the close of the half. M - Treasure Valley 0-1 Spokane... Abad only needed one save for the shutout.  PHOTOS [+]  VIDEO [+]
