NWAC East Update 10.26.19: CBC Men Win East, Playoff Picture Coming Into Focus

Columbia Basin won a battle of the top two in the East on Saturday, downing Spokane to clinch the NWAC East Men's title.

On the women's side of things the Hawks locked up the second seed by completing a sweep of the Sasquatch on the season. Walla Walla kept its unbeaten status intact with a win over North Idaho that left the Cardinals in playoff limbo along with Yakima Valley, which suffered a surprise loss at the hands of Treasure Valley as the Chukars won their second of the weekend. NIC and YVC are tied for fourth and sit three back of Spokane for the third playoff spot with the Bigfoot and Cardinals set to square off on the final night while the Yaks visit Wenatchee Valley, which is coming off of finally getting its first win.

Friday

W - Wenatchee Valley 1-2 Treasure Valley... Mary Calley gave the Chukars the lead in the 32nd minute courtesy of Brenda Trejo and in the 51st Sydney Chandler found Elexus Nochebuena for what proved to be the game-winner as TVCC picked up its third victory. Erin Aamold scored in the 63rd for the Knights.

W - Yakima Valley 2-0 Blue Mountain... Kirsten Stickney connected with Corynn Vigil for the opener in the 36th and Brianna Beuck added some insurance in the 53rd for the Yaks to keep their postseason hopes alive. Brylee Ward only needed two saves for the shutout.


Saturday

W - Yakima Valley 0-2 Treasure Valley...  Nochebuena scored her second of the weekend, breaking the scoreless stalemate in the 53rd via Calley. Chandler capped the surprise win with the second goal in the final minute and Hannah Simpson was key with nine saves in the game for the clean sheet.

W - Wenatchee Valley 4-1 Blue Mountain... In a battle of the bottom two the Knights finally claimed their first victory of the season, rallying from a 32nd minute goal by Cheyenne Saul for the hosts. Gretta Wiersman scored in the 39th to even it up before halftime. In the second half Aamold scored in the 47th and 77th with Maggie Miller connecting inbetween in the 55th.  Taryn McCullough made five saves for the Knights, who played to a draw against Blue Mountain in their first meeting.

W - North Idaho 0-1 Walla Walla... Taylen Wohl scored the deciding tally minutes before the break with Payton Thompson finding her in the 43rd. Josey Gunter made three saves for the Warriors.

W - Spokane 0-1 Columbia Basin... Cassidie Andrews gave the Hawks the early lead 16 minutes in via Bailey Whitney and held on to lock up the second seed out of the East with RiaJo Schwartz making five saves.

Friday

M - Wenatchee Valley 1-0 Treasure Valley... The winless Chukars were making life difficult for the visiting Knights, taking the contest to the late stages before WVC found the winner from Danny Sandoval on a ball from Ignacio Castillo. Alexis Calderilla made four saves in the shutout.

Saturday

M - Spokane 1-3 Columbia Basin... Christian Bahena gave the Sasquatch the intitial lead four minutes in courtesy of Carlos Campo, but the second half belonged to the host Hawks. Jhonny Nyabenda found Mario Negrete four minutes after the break for the equalizer. Juan Mendoza put them in front via Felix Mendoza in the 67th and three minutes later Brian Licona hit for some insurance.

M - North Idaho 0-1 Walla Walla... Erick Perez scored the lone goal for the Warriors in the 23rd minute and Antonio Campos made six stops for the shutout in a game halted and called in the 89th minute due to a broken goalpost.

Around the NWAC: Rafael Cuevas (Yakima, WA) set up the goal for Skagit Valley in a 2-1 loss to Everett... Joel Witts (Bend, OR) played 35 shutout minutes in goal for Rogue in 1-0 win against Portland.
