College Notebook 11.01.19: Unbeaten Griz Win Big Sky Title

The regular season is quickly coming to a close for most leagues. The Big Sky was the first for the area programs as Montana won a big showdown against Eastern Washington with the league title at stake. In other dramatic moments, a local duo helped lead the Santa Clara women to a stunning three-goal comeback for a 4-3 victory against Pepperdine.

-- For games through Sunday, October 27* --

WOMEN - BIG SKY CONFERENCE (* includes ppd 10.30 makeup)

Friday

Eastern Washington 4-1 Portland State... McKaley Goffard (Kennewick, WA) put the Eagles in front eight minutes in, but the Vikings answered in the 17th to even it back up. Kendall Pope (Kennewick, WA) would restore the EWU lead via Saige Lyons in the 26th and Maddie Morgan (Kennewick, WA) would make the lead two in the 40th. A penalty from Madison Kem in the 87th capped things for the game as Eastern outshot their hosts 13-0 in the second half.

Idaho 0-1 (OT) Sacramento State... The Vandals were out to spoil the unbeaten run for the Hornets, but the scoreless stalemate ended in favor of the hosts in the final 110th minute.

Idaho State 1-2 (OT) Southern Utah... For a moment it looked like the Bengals were taking a turn in a positive direction, but they fell to a winless SUU side in the final weekend. The hosts scored in the 25th with Michaela Didericksen tallying via Morgan Hall (Preston, ID) in the 39th. SUU grabbed the win in the 98th.

Weber State 1-1 Northern Arizona

Sunday

Eastern Washington 0-1 Sacramento State... The Eagles missed out on clinching the Big Sky title as the Hornets finished out their unbeaten season with a free kick goal in the 72nd minute.

Montana 1-1 Northern Colorado... Rita Lang scored 14 minutes into the match for the Griz, but an own goal in the 36th left them a point back of Eastern in the table going into their regular season finale. It was the first ball to get past Claire Howard, who had five saves, in five games, ending her four-game shutout streak.

Idaho State 2-3 (OT) Northern Arizona... Natasha Camacho-Bier scored the opener for the Bengals in the 28th minute via Didericksen, but the hosts answered just two minutes later and claimed the lead in the 32nd. Jazmin Lopez would bring them back level in the 62nd minute, but NAU prevailed in the eighth minute of overtime.

Idaho 1-0 Portland State... A ball from Maddie Haas (Lewiston, ID) found Malia Morales for the deciding tally in the 75th minute as the Vandals jumped up to seventh in the table, narrowly missing out on the postseason by a single point. Julia Byerlein made five saves in the shutout.

Weber State 0-0 Southern Utah

Wednesday

Montana 1-0 Eastern Washington... In a quirk of destiny, the postponed match proved to be the deciding contest with the outcome determining the Big Sky champion and third place finisher. Despite the Eagles, who merely needed a draw, having the better of play, the match was extremely tight with no good looks either way and was deadlocked going into the late stages of the contest when Montana found the conference-winner. A corner from Avery Adams in the 79th minute found the head of Kendall Furrow - an unexpected sub due to an injury - at the near post to give the Griz a conference-leading fourth unbeaten regular season title (1997, 1999, 2014, 2019). Only five other programs have accomplished the feat - once each. Claire Howard finished the day with just one save for her seventh shutout in Big Sky play, allowing just two goals in nine games.
