College Notebook 11.12.19: Boise State Finally Wins Mountain West Tourney

It has been a big week of celebration around the region as teams played in conference tournaments, claimed league championships and earned national tournament berths.

Boise State finally completed the elusive feat of capturing the Mountain West tournament championship by getting the better of their nemesis San Diego State to raise the trophy for the first time. Meanwhile, Seattle also celebrated the WAC championship and another NCAA tournament appearance.

Washington prevailed in the Apple Cup Series meeting against Washington State, but both heard their names called during the selection show and will host in the First Round, the Huskies hosting neighboring Seattle in what should be a packed house. Players from the region also advanced to the DI NCAA tournament with Santa Clara, Utah and Northern Colorado, which claimed the Big Sky championship against Eastern Washington after the pair knocked out the top two seeds in the semifinals.

Elsewhere, Pacific Lutheran finished off the Northwest Conference (DIII) race for the men's title, making it a sweep for men and women in the league. Also sweeping was Western Washington in the DII Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

BIG SKY CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT

First Round - 10.06

(5) Northern Arizona 1-2 Northern Colorado (4)... An own goal gave the hosts the lead four minutes into the second half, but NAU tied it up in the 61st. The winning strike came in the fourth minute of overtime.

(6) Portland State 0-3 Eastern Washington (3)...  Despite outshooting the Vikings 7-2 in the first half, the game went to the break scoreless. The Eags, though, finally broke through when Mya Elder-Hammond found Sariah Keister in the 55th. Freshman Maddie Morgan (Kennewick, WA) put the game away with two goals in three minutes, scoring the first via Saige Lyons in the 78th and the second in the 80th. Kelsee Winston (Pasco, WA) made five saves for one of only two shutouts of the tournament.

Semifinals - 10.08

(3) Eastern Washington 2-1 (OT) Sacramento State (2)... The unbeaten Hornets grabbed the lead five minutes before intermission, but Elder-Hammond was key again in getting things started for the Eagles, finding Madison Kem for the equalizer in the 61st. The two were deadlocked for the final half-hour and went well into overtime before Morgan stepped into the limelight again, scoring the winner - and third goal of the tourney - courtesy of Keister in the 102nd. The victory ended Sacramento State's record unbeaten run at 16 games.

Northern Colorado 2-1 (OT) Montana... The hosts again got on the board first, tallying in the 15th minute and holding the advantage until McKenzie Kilpatrick found Alexa Coyle (Bozeman, MT) inside the six in the 80th minute for the equalizer. The Bears, though, knocked off the regular season champions int he 100th minute.

Championship - 10.10

(3) Eastern Washington 0-1 Northern Colorado (4)... A goal from the hosts in the ninth minute proved to be the difference as Eastern was unable to find an equalizer in the remaining 80 minutes as Winston made six saves to keep the Eagles in it.

Eastern Washington's Morgan would finish as the leading scorer with her three goals as UNC's Taylor Bray was the only other play with a second goal - the championship winner. The two led the All-Tournament Team...

11.06 - BYU 3-0 Gonzaga... The Cougars showed just why they are atop the table, spoiling the Senior Night celebrations for the Zags with three first half goals on a frigid evening.

11.07 - New Mexico 0-6 Boise State... Enjoying home field in the postseason for the first time, the Broncos enjoyed the day and locked it up in a three-goal, two-minute span in the first half. Raimee Sherle (Meridian, ID) scored int he 24th and 25th minutes before Aubree Chatterton (Boise, ID) added a third in the 26th. Kristina Serres set up the latter two. Sherle kept her hot streak going with the opening goal via Emily Currey in the 17th minute. Chatterton fed Mckenna Kynett five minutes into the second half for some insurance while Sydney Smith closed out the game, though she only needed two saves in the shutout. Last season the Broncos were knocked out in penalties by host San Jose State in the semifinals.
