Stories of the Day - March 18: Rivalries get hot; USL trials & top goals

The lackluster start to Rivalry Week in MLS on Saturday gave way to a pair of thrilling contests in Texas and California Sunday. Houston rallied from two down to pull even in Dallas only to see a controversial goal give the hosts the win. In the LA, the reigning champion Galaxy held a one-goal lead over 10-man Chivas USA, but the previously hapless goats fired back for an unexpected 1-1 draw for a pair of surprising results over the past two weeks. Here is the NASR TODAY round-up with links to recaps, scores and highlights.

Kinnear: 'Cheaters' & the 'Sickening Epidemic'
After the heartbreaking loss, Houston coach Dominic Kinnear had plenty to say about the calls in the match, particularly the foul that led to the opening tally on a long-distance free kick. He shared how saddened he has become over continual diving in the league that is going unpunished.

Canadian Heat
Things have started off well for the Canadian clubs, but the rivalry showdown between Toronto and Montreal ended in a surprising scuffle between new Montreal coach Marco Schallibaum and Toronto back Richard Eckersley after the match. Apparently the Impact coach felt disrespected, but reports on what exactly happened leading up to the confrontation are murky at best.

International Two-Step
LA Times writer Kevin Baxter provides an excellent look at Joe Corona and his dual citizenship on and off the field. Corona discusses his heritage and how he views the hyphen in Mexican-American as a bridge as opposed to a separation between the two.

A Positive Goalkeeper Story
While goalkeepers have been dropping like flies of late (Hope Solo, Jill Loyden, Tim Howard, Matt Pickens), here is a story from Michael Bullock about Phil Tuttle, who was knocked out in preseason last year heading into what was going to be his first year as the starter for the Harrisburg City Islanders after a rookie campaign as back-up. A year later, rehab on his ACL tear has him back in camp, but now he's fighting for a job that was all his before. NOTE: Bullock also takes a look at possible Philadelphia Union loans that could be headed to Harrisburg.

A Father's Promise
Here is another preseason USL Pro story, but it is vastly different. The Wilmington Hammerheads' tryout Saturday featured a 41-year-old father who was participating, with permission of the club, in response to a promise he made with his daughter who spent a better part of the year returning from injury, hoping to be ready in time for local ODP trials.

A Costly Salute
Following up on a story from earlier, the Greek federation has decided to hand down a lifetime ban on a player who gave a Nazi salute during domestic league play over the weekend. The move is primarily symbolic as the former youth international has never featured for the national team. Reaction from the club and league is yet to be determined or announced.

Whoops!
Sometimes trying to get the scoop can make you the news story as a British writer Oliver Kay has found out this weekend after having a story published in The Times about a newly-proposed fantasy club league that would be played in Qatar. Problem is, as it turns out, that it was all a farce created by a French website that ran the clearly comedic piece that somehow made its way to the previously highly regarded English writer, who took it for truth. Rival publisher, The Guardian, examines how it happened and the give-and-take between Kay and the Twitter feeds of Yahoo's Eurosport and the French site in question.
