Division I Round-up: Vandals grab Big Sky lead; WSU & BSU sweep

Unbeaten a year ago, the Montana Grizzlies know how difficult maintaining that status is and were in position to knock both Big Sky leaders Eastern Washington and Idaho off their perfect league starts and put themselves back in the conference title picture in the process. It took overtime, but Montana was able to prevail at home against the Eagles, but the second half of the two-game dip was a bit tougher as they fell on the road, leaving the Vandals - picked ninth in the preseason coaches poll - in sole possession of first place.

Meanwhile, the Washington State women posted a pair of road victories in Utah and Colorado to remain second in the Pac-12 and Boise State posted a pair of convincing wins as well at home and on the road in the Mountain West to even out their record.

The Gonzaga women split in their two-game trip to California with a loss and a draw while the Bulldog men opened conference play with a 2-1 victory at Portland.

Here is a round-up of the action last week:

WOMEN #############

BIG SKY CONFERENCE

Friday, October 9

Eastern Washington 1 :: OT :: 2 Montana
An unforced turnover allowed the Grizzlies to grab the lead at home in the 17th minute of the contest via Dani Morris, but the visiting Eagles pulled even in the 33rd when Jenny Chavez got her head onto the corner kick from Chloe Williams, ending a scoring drought against Montana dating back to 2009. The two sides remained deadlocked through the rest of regulation - though Montana's Mackenzie Akins had one shot saved onto the woodwork and another hit the crossbar directly - until a blocked shot by Jenna Castillo rebounded to Allie Lucas for the game winner with just over two minutes remaining in overtime, snapping Eastern's eight-game winning streak.  MORE: EWU [+] -- UM [+]

Idaho State 1 :: 4 Portland State
The Vikings took the lead in the 19th minute and pushed the lead to three with two more goals in the final four minutes of the first half. Maria Sanchez showed her brilliance with a fantastic run through the defense in the 54th minute, but her solo effort was not enough and was immediately answered two minutes later by the hosts.  MORE [+]

Sacramento State 2 :: 4 Weber State
North Dakota 1 :: 1 Southern Utah
Northern Colorado 2 :: OT :: 1 Northern Arizona

Sunday, October 11

Montana 1 :: 3 Idaho
The Grizzlies were unable to complete a sweep of the top two teams in the table and climb back into the title chase, falling on the road to the Vandals after a first half stalemate. A throw-in into the box five minutes into the second period by Josilyn Daggs was headed home by Alyssa Lloyd for the lead and just over five minutes later Kavita Battan and Kayla Watanabe combined to feed a long pass to Clara Gomez to double the lead. In the 69th minute the Grizzlies got back into the mix on a great play by Akins, who drove to the end line on the left side by beating three Vandals before sending a lofted ball to Castillo for a header at the far post. Dreams of a full rally were dashed 10 minutes later when Battan put away a cross from Gomez.  MORE:  UM [+] -- UI [+]

Sacramento State 3 :: 2 Idaho State
The Bengals returned home, but again found themselves down multiple goals at the break having allowed back-to-back goals in the 28th and 29th minutes. Sanchez scored another good goal by beating a defender to score four minutes into the second half, but the visitors added an important third goal in the 61st that proved to be the winner with Sanchez converting a penalty in the 77th after she was fouled in the box.  MORE [+]

The hosts answered four minutes later and the two sides were deadlocked until the third minute of overtime when Bevans launched a shot from about 30 yards that swerved in front of goal before finding the back of the net for the win.  MORE [+]
