HS Daily - 3.22.18: CV, NC Post Big Wins on Opening Day for GSL

The Greater Spokane League kicked off with a banger of a doubleheader at Joe Albi Stadium Wednesday night with Central Valley winning an exciting battle of contenders 2-0 against Lewis & Clark in the opener, which was followed by another thriller that saw North Central upset Mead in a shootout after a 1-1 draw.

Central Valley 2-0 Lewis & Clark

The action started furiously with the Tigers on fire in the attack in the opening 15 minutes with a barrage of shots on the Bears' goal. Jared Mehaffey struck one off the bar about eight minutes in and three minutes later William Hoefer launched a rocket that goalkeeper Andrew Bertone got his hand to and deflected off the top of the bar. Later in the half Bertone came out to challenge near the top of the box and denied another shot point-blank as he dropped to the turf.

Noah Dreves
His efforts were rewarded at the other end with Noah Dreves putting the defending champions on the board at the half-hour mark. Bertone was not done though as he made another excellent save about two minutes into the second half, tipping another shot over the goal to keep the Bears in front. Eight minutes later a corner from Conner Wold would find the head of Isaac Saitoti for some insurance as CV clamped down on the contest from there.

Mead 1-2 (SO 2-4) North Central

In another exciting contest with a lot of great chances, Josh Ruff kept North Central in the contest against the Panthers with several great stops in the match. He also denied a penalty in the 39th minute of the match, but Mead, however, would get on the board just 15 seconds later when Mead intercepted the long distribution with a header that put the ball back into the area. After a brief battle for control among several players Tristan Piper knocked it past Ruff for the lead.

Jake Healy
Five minutes after the break the hosts quickly evened up the contest when a quickly taken long throw from Parish Neil bounced at the six in front of Jake Healy, who deftly took it off his chest and flicked a header over the keeper and a defender into the far side netting for the equalizer.

Rain began to fell with regularity as the second half advanced and neither side was able to find a winner through regulation and overtime, sending it to a shootout. After two rounds of converted shots, Ruff denied the next two as NC continued to score, clinching the decision in the fourth round 4-2.
