On rivalry day in the Greater Spokane League, a number of close contests resulted in Gonzaga Prep and North Central, both 3-0, at the top of the table come the close of Wednesday night's action. Meanwhile, Pasco took care of business Tuesday to remain perfect through five and top 3A side Kennewick survived a scare from Kamiakin with a win in overtime.
Greater Spokane League
A narrow 1-0 decision to fellow contender Lewis & Clark gave Ferris its first loss of the season, allowing Gonzaga Prep to leapfrog them into the top spot in the GSL with an expected win against Rogers. Meanwhile, North Central fought off a game rival in Shadle Park for a 2-0 win that kept them unbeaten and tied for first overall in the league with Prep with eight points after three contests.
Rogers 0-4 Gonzaga Prep
In a contest that was far closer than the scoreline indicated, Rogers battled valiantly against the Bullpups. In addition to keeping the hosts off the board for 25 minutes, the Pirates had several scoring chances and a decent amount of possession to keep the contest on an even keel. A corner, though, put the Bullpups on the board first when Jacob Bach scored in the 25th minute off the service from Mitchel Torre, who would go on to score himself about a minute later.
In the second half Rogers had two fantastic chances that could have seen them tie the match up. Javier Ayala-Rosales just missed the target in the 64th minute and five minutes later Taki Al-Tamimi came just as close to getting the Pirates on the board. Gonzaga Prep would lock things up in the closing stages of the game as Rogers wore out, but it would take two attempts from the spot to do so. Daunte DeMarce stopped the first penalty he faced, but a few minutes later the hosts would go back to the spot and see Ethan Watkins convert in the 79th. Watkins would add on a second tally in stoppage time. Isaiah Damschen finished with his third shutout in as many games.
North Central 2-0 Shadle Park
It is not often North Central finds itself at the top of the table after three games, but a pair of wins over 4A opponents in their first two games put them in position to be there. They had to keep that excitement in check, though, as they faced rival Highlanders. In a back-and-forth affair it was a corner set piece that led to the opening goal. The short corner was cycled around on the right side of the box, finding Aidan Chaparro for the finish in the 22nd minute.
Early in the second half he would add a second for insurance, capitalizing on a free kick five minutes in amidst protests from Shadle players who were expecting a whistle to restart play. Sparking the controversy was a lengthy delay for the free kick while the referee spoke with a huddle of players at the spot of the foul and everyone waited for arrival of the ball, which had gone well out of play. Realizing the referee had not indicated restart off the whistle, Chaparro immediately fired from about 28 yards at goal a split second after the ball arrived and set in place, catching the Highlanders unprepared. Josh Ruff recorded his second shutout in the win.
