HS Daily - 3.25.18: G-Prep Nips CV in PKs, NC Tops Another 4A School

It looks like the Greater Spokane League boys soccer season may be a thriller this spring with numerous thrilling contests just two matchdays in. On Friday, it started with Ferris edging Mead 2-1 to go top of the table and finished with Gonzaga Prep edging defending champion Central Valley on penalties while North Central was going to 1-0-1 against 4A opposition with a 1-0 win against University next door.

Ferris 2-1 Mead

In frigid, blustery conditions the Saxons and Panthers were nearing a scoreless first half when Gafishi Gasabato broke the deadlock for the visitors when LaQuann Crump drove up the left side and delivered a low ball into the six for the finish in the 34th minute.

Caiden Fickenscher tied things up in the 57th minute for Mead and the two were deadlocked until Ferris, again, scored with six minutes left on the clock. This time, they forced a turnover on a throw at midfield and quickly took advantage with Leo Cox scoring from outside the box for the winner.

Gonzaga Prep 1-0 (3-1 SO) Central Valley

The defending champions had the better of possession and were on the attack much of the contest, but Bullpup keeper Isaiah Damschen made numerous saves to keep the contest deadlocked in the chilly conditions at a rare Bears home match away from Central Valley.

Not surprisingly, both sides went the distance without a score, continuing Prep's outstanding start to a campaign that also included shutouts in all four preseason contests - including at Moses Lake and Eastmont - and the season opener against Shadle Park. Central Valley's defensive prowess is continuing from last year when they posted six shutouts in official competition and allowed just seven goals in league play.

For Central Valley, Logan Coddington posted the Bears shutout two days after Andrew Bertone blanked LC. It was the second for Damschen, who went on to make three saves in the shootout for the tiebreaker victory [LIVE LOOK IN of shootout HERE +]
