Lower Division Recap: Round 6

Perhaps it should have been an omen when the LA derby between the USL Pro Blues and the Galaxy Reserves finished 4-3 as the week saw a plentitude of goals scored with nine teams scoring at least three goals in the course of a dozen games.

North American Soccer League

The road teams had little luck on the weekend. San Antonio went to Carolina and were crushed behind the spectacular offensive performance put in by Zack Schilawski (two goals, one assist) and Brian Shriver (two goals) in a 5-2 victory for the RailHawks Saturday. In Fort Lauderdale, Mark Anderson gave the Strikers the lead two minutes in and David Foley doubled the advantage in the 14th. Pablo Campos pulled on back in the 69th, but it wasn’t enough as Fort Lauderdale topped the co-league leaders 2-1 for their first victory of the season, allowing Carolina to finish the weekend in sole possession of first after a two-week, three-way tie.

On Sunday, Atlanta’s day started going awry in the 23rd minute when goalkeeper Joe Nasco handled the ball outside of the box and was sent off. The Silverback nearly made it to half scoreless, but everything unraveled in the final four minutes of the half with Daryl Fordyce breaking the stalemate in the 41st and Michael Cox doubling the gap in the 44th. Cox scored a fantastic overhead strike five minutes into the second half to secure the 3-0 result. The win moved FC Edmonton level with Tampa Bay and Minnesota for second in the league.

USL Pro

A handful of clubs continue to dominate with Orlando City (6-1-1), Charleston (5-1-0), Harrisburg (5-1-0) and Richmond (4-0-2) chief among them along with Charlotte (2-0-3), which was idle.

Orlando City crossed the country and blanked the Sounders Reserves 2-0 on a pair of goals set up by Dennis Chin and scored by, no surprise, Dom Dwyer. The Sporting KC loanee now has 10 goals in eight games. Charleston, meanwhile, dispatched their northern rivals from Wilmington, 4-2 with the goals from four different players in the first half-hour..

Harrisburg blanked Antigua 4-0 with the Sainey Touray show as the striker set up the opener a minute in and added two more goals in the third and 68th. Antigua did not find much more success the following night in Richmond, falling 4-1 to the Kickers, who rolled to the win with Joseph Ngwenya netting a first-half hat-trick.

Also of note from the week was Rochester finally getting their first win. The Rhinos snared a late 1-0 decision in Wilmington courtesy of Matt Horth in the 79th.

Phoenix, meanwhile, nearly picked up a pair of draws on the road with some late comebacks, but came up short each time. On Thursday Jose Angulo gave Pittsburgh a two-goal advantage before Aaron King scored in the 90th for Phoenix in the 2-1 defeat.

Then on Saturday the Wolves took the lead in Dayton via Thomas Ramos six minutes in before seeing the Dutch Lions run off four straight, including two from Gibson Bardsley. Phoenix fought back with back-to-back goals to pull within one with 10 minutes left but couldn’t find the equalizer in the 4-3 defeat.

The Phoenix comeback was similar to how the week began as the Blues tried to rally against the Galaxy, who took a four-goal lead 48 minutes in courtesy, in large part, to a goal and two assists from Hector Jimenez. An own goal and a penalty helped the Blues rally to within one, but they couldn’t find the fourth in the final eight minutes as they came up short.

Kekuta Manneh was the star early in the week as he scored the opener and set up the winner as Vancouver prevailed 2-1 in Colorado Tuesday. Hector Jimenez topped that with a goal and two assists for the Galaxy as they downed USL Pro side LA Blues later that day. Then on Sunday, the Sounders Reserves were blanked 2-0 by USL Pro’s Orlando City, who took the win with a pair of goals from Dom Dwyer, who is on loan from their affiliate Sporting Kansas City, who coincidentally lost 1-0 to the Sounders in midweek action.
