College Notebook 10.22.18 - Boise State Claims First Title as EWU, Montana Qualify in Big Sky

@BroncoSportsSoc
Sunday was a huge day for area Division I sides as Eastern Washington and Montana picked up key victories in their season finales to grabbed the final two berths in the Big Sky tournament. Meanwhile, a scoreless draw between two of the top sides in the Mountain West saw the Boise State Broncos earn a share of the league championship - for the first time in program history - going into their final game next week. The postseason and championship races are heading into the final week (or two) in many other leagues around the region.

Here's a recap of the weekend's action and breakdowns on where things stand around the northwest...

## Women's Scores & Notes ##

Pac-12, Mountain West & West Coast Conferences

MW - San Jose State 0-0 Boise State :: The Broncos came away with a draw that ensured at least a share of the Mountain West championship. Tara Fisher made three saves for the clean sheet.

WCC - Gonzaga 0-1 Santa Clara :: The Broncos picked up the victory between the two one-loss sides with Maria Sanchez (American Falls, ID) scoring the deciding goal eight minutes into the contest.

PAC12 - Washington State 1-2 Arizona :: The Cougs dropped their fifth consecutive as the two exchanged goals midway through the second half. The hosts jumped in front in the 61st with Maegan O'Neill (Spokane, WA) evening it up in the 69th. The Wildcats, though, answered three minutes later with the winner.

PAC12 - Utah 2-1 California :: Makayla Christensen (Meridian, ID) scored the equalizer for the Utes in the comeback win.

Standings:  PAC-12   MW   WCC

Big Sky Conference

Montana 3-1 Sacramento State :: The Griz took the lead early looking to control their bid for one of the two remaining playoff spots. Janessa Fowler converted a penalty 11 minutes in and Caitlin Rogers found Kennedy Yost (Pocatello, ID)  for a second just four minutes later. Rogers set up Alexa Coyle (Bozeman, MT) in the 63rd to put the game out of reach for the Hornets, though Caitlin Prothe (Spokane, WA) would spoil the shutout with a goal in the 86th.

Eastern Washington 2-0 Southern Utah :: Needing a win to ensure a return to the postseason, the defending champs finally broke through with a penalty converted by Jenny Chavez in the 69th minute. Saige Lyons added some insurance in the 87th as the Eags locked up one of the two remaining berths. Kelsee Winston (Pasco, WA) made eight saves for the shutout.

Idaho 0-0 Northern Arizona :: The defensive stalemate finished with Makayla Presgrave making seven saves for the Vandals in the shutout. The draw left them short of a share of the league title, but with Northern Colorado, a point back, also playing to a draw they would finish second and get the other first round bye. The Vandals finished the month without allowing a goal in five consecutive games to finish the season with seven shutouts in nine games.

Northern Colorado 1-1 Portland State :: Tiegan Horton (Coeur d'Alene, ID / North Idaho College) finished with four saves for the Vikings, but a win would not have been enough either as both EWU and Montana had also won.

Standings
Weber State 7-1-1... 22 pts*

Northern Colorado 6-2-1... 19*

Great Northwest Athletic Conference - Standings

With two weeks remaining in the season Simon Fraser has already locked up the league championship at 8-0-0 with MSU Billings at 4-4-1 leading the rest of the pack. Unfortunately, the GNAC men's soccer conference does not feature a playoff tournament as its women's counterpart does.

Concordia 3-2 (OT) Northwest Nazarene :: Jake Levine (Spokane, WA) and Danny Cuevas (Caldwell, ID) combined to set up Skyler Munroe (Boise, ID) in the 14th minute only to see the Cavaliers even it up six minutes later. Levine put them back in front in the 32nd minute through Grant Larson, but another quick reply three minutes later knotted things up again. The two remained deadlocked through the second half before the visitors claimed the win four minutes into extra time.

MSU Billings 3-2 Seattle Pacific :: Adam Hepburn combined with Luca Battistotti to set up Samuele Folla for the opener 14 minutes in for the Yellowjackets and after the Falcons tied it up Hepburn's deflected shot was put away by Pascal Pisarek to go ahead once more in the 33rd. Pisarek would strike again for what proved to be the winner as Sam Rucklos (Boise, ID) set up a late goal for the Falcons.

Saint Martin's 0-3 Simon Fraser

The hosts regained the advantage in the 61st with Peter Stephens knotting it back up with a penalty in the 87th.

Sunday - George Fox 1-1 Willamette
Sunday - Linfield 2-2 Pacific

Cascade Collegiate Conference - Standings

Nearly everything is up for grabs going into the final weekend as unbeaten Southern Oregon 10-0-1 has not yet clinched the top spot with Corban three points back. Rocky Mountain and Eastern Oregon are out of reach seven back but have locked up berths along with Providence as the top eight advance to the conference tournament. There are five sides scrambling for the final three spots with Evergreen State at 18 points with Oregon Tech and Carroll two back and College of Idaho and Warner Pacific five back.

Esau Vazquez (Kennewick, WA / Walla Walla CC) helped allay any of those concerns three minutes later when he found Mitchell Balmer to complete a hat-trick.

College of Idaho 4-3 Warner Pacific :: An own goal gave the Yotes an early lead on the road 20 minutes in and Ben Bechor pushed the lead to three with a penalty in the 32nd and one off a ball from Bekir Cinac (Boise, ID) six minutes later. The Knights made things interesting with goals in the 55th and 65th, but another penalty converted by Matthew Sammartino (Eagle, ID) was enough for the Yotes to hang on for the win.

Northwest Christian 1-2 Eastern Oregon :: Jorge Chavez put the Mountaineers on the board with a penalty in the seventh minute. He then turned provider, finding Carlos Solorio in the 32nd for what proved to be the game-winner as the Beacons got a penalty of their own a minute later.
