HS UPDATE 10.18.18: Central Valley Clinches GSL Title

In a showdown for the top spot in the Greater Spokane League, Gonzaga Prep and Central Valley went to the second half before things picked up. The Bears scored twice early in the periods and survived some late drama to clinch the regular season GSL title as they head into the final game Friday against North Central with a perfect record.

Prep's loss drops them to 6-2 on the season and leaves them in a battle for second with Mead, which sits a point back. Mead visits Shadle Park Friday while the Bullpups will have to a Mt Spokane side that is riding high following an surprising 3-0 win against Lewis & Clark Wednesday evening and narrowly lost 1-0 on a free kick to CV last Friday. Though, desire for win in the finale could be tempered by the fact they locked up the top 3A seed last night sitting three points clear of NC with the head-to-head win.

With the results Wednesday all the GSL sides are all set for the postseason with seeding only to be determined. University battled for a 2-1 win over North Central that created a big enough gap with Ferris and LC both losing. They visit with an outside shot of grabbing a seed higher than four if the other two falter. The 3As are set with Mt Spokane, North Central and Shadle Park locked in respectively.

Down south in the Mid-Columbia Conference there was a rare Wednesday night league contest with Chiawana facing Pasco. The Bulldogs gave the Riverhawks a little bit of a scare, but a hat-trick from Macey Morales ensured their 10th win to keep them even with Richland, which has a game in hand in addition to the season finale showdown - and only meeting this season - between the two at Chiawana that will likely decide the top 4A seed and second place behind 3A Kamiakin.

Hanford and Walla Walla, meanwhile, are locked into the three and four seeds, respectively for 4A. In the 3A Southridge is two wins ahead of Kennewick, but fell to the Lions earlier this season making their showdown next Tuesday a crucial contest if the Suns fall at Richland tonight and Kennewick wins against visiting Hanford Saturday.

## Greater Spokane League ##

Gonzaga Prep 1-2 Central Valley :: The Bullpups had the best chance of a scattered first half in which neither side really found any kind of rhythm, but early in the second half a long ball out of the back resulted in Maggie Ames being fouled at the edge of the box by goalkeeper Eden Elliott. Marissa Bankey put away the penalty and the Bears immediately began to swarm the goal for more. Ames would get a chance from the right edge in the 52nd minute for a goal of her own. It proved crucial as the Bullpups would get a goal from Kyah Le late in the contest that created some last-minute drama.

About 10 minutes later Sydnee Suarez scored what proved to be the winner, stealing the ball from a defender and firing from outside the box. The Bulldogs gave them a score, however, by pulling back within one. Claire Potter tallied to make it 3-1 at halftime and Julyanne Mendoza struck from about 20 yards out early in the second half. Macey Morales, though, put the match away, tallying in the 58th and capping the game with a penalty just before the final whistle.
