HS DAILY - 9.21.16: Medical Lake edges Deer Park in NEA stunner

East Valley continues to roll in the Great Northern League, but the bigger story on the evening was Medical Lake handing Deer Park its first shutout loss in two years in a showdown of two of the Northeast A League's top sides.

NEA #####

Things were tight in Medical Lake where the Cardinals snagged a narrow 1-0 victory over Deer Park. Makayla Geiger scored the team's sixth consecutive goal over the course of three games for the win (eighth in NEA play) in the 59th minute, but it was goalkeeper Taylor Cannon that may deserve most of the credit with 15 saves on the night as the Stags were shutout for the first time since October 21 of 2014.

Colville rolled to a 4-0 win at Freeman with Keren Torres scoring the two first half goals to bring her to four on the NEA season. Kirsten Stickney netted in the 70th for her sixth.

Lexi Torok scored her fifth goal of the NEA season for the lone goal in the first half as Lakeside rolled to a 3-0 win at Newport two more tallies in the second half.

In a non-league affair, Riverside drubbed Kellogg 4-0 on the road with Jamie Conner tallying the opener and setting up the next two goals.

GNL #####

East Valley moved to 3-0 with a dominant performance against their local foes. Micaela Verdal tallied a hat-trick on the night while Chloe Gellhaus put forth a goal and assist. Verdal gave the Knights the lead eight minutes in and after a Chelsea Koker equalizer for the Eagles two minutes later Verdal scored a second go-ahead goal in the 25th. Gellhaus provided what proved to be the game-winner in the 36th and set up Verdal for the insurance tally in the 56th.  They were Verdal's first goals since scoring three minutes into their GNL opener.

Clarkston, meanwhile, rolled in a 5-1 road win at Pullman with Makinzie Packwood tallying two goals and two assists, bringing her GNL goal total to six. Taylen Wohl (goal and two assists) and Kaela Southwick (goal, assist) played large roles as well in the result.

Cheney blanked Lakeland (Idaho 4A) with Madison O'Callaghan tallying a goal and assist in the non-league contest.
