In a pair of contests side by side on Friday at Dwight Merkel there were two completely different stories. Mead, fighting to stay in contention among the 4A schools battled a game Shadle Park team in a narrow 2-1 victory while Central Valley rebounded from their midweek disaster at Rogers with a thumping of North Central 6-1.
News came in Monday of the decision from the Greater Spokane League athletic directors regarding the protest filed by Central Valley following Wednesday's misapplication of the Laws of the Game on their overtime penalty kick by the referees in their match at Rogers. The match will be replayed from the point of the penalty kick at Rogers at Thursday at 3:30 (INWsn is hoping to be there with a LIVE LOOK IN on Facebook). As it occurred during overtime, the match will be over if Central Valley scores because it is golden goal. If they do not score, the second overtime period will continue from there. The decision overturns the previous 2-1 overtime victory Rogers claimed due to the error. More about the incident [+]
Greater Spokane League
Among the highlights from Friday's matches was a wild contest between University and Lewis & Clark in which the Titans rallied from two down twice to even the match up. The match was decided in overtime when Jared Mehaffey, who scored twice, knocked a cross through the box that a defender deflected in for an own goal with just moments left in stoppage time. Isaiah Damschen of Gonzaga Prep blanked Mt Spokane for his fifth shutout of the league campaign and Caden Martin scored in his fourth consecutive match for Ferris.
Central Valley 6-1 North Central
The Bears scored twice in a four-minute span early in the match to gain control with Devin Hauenstein scoring on a great individual effort for the first, chesting a ball down and splitting a pair of defenders to score from close range. Four minutes later Conner Wold brought a cross down at the far post and fired a shot near post that Joshua Ruff was unable to get a full hand to. Aidan Chaparro scored nine minutes into the second half to pull NC back within one, but Reece Bumgarner answered seven minutes later to restore the two-goal margin. The Bears would tack on three more in the final six minutes, one from Taylor Leach and then two from Isaac Saitoti, to lock up the big win.
Mead 2-1 Shadle Park
Adam Nevdahl scored just shy of the half-hour mark to put the Panthers in front, but Gage Smith scored on a free kick just before halftime to knot things up at the break. It was the first goal of the league campaign for the Highlanders. Mead, though, quickly reclaimed the advantage just four minutes into the second half when Kyler Willard connected with Kaden Evans.

Note: The leagues are combined solely to simplify everything into one list instead of four and not for league-to-league comparison due to varying games played and quality of competition. PARENTS... note that several games and details are missing (particularly in GNL/NEA/MCC). I do my best to request from coaches, but often without reply. Be sure to nudge your coach about making sure your teams are fully covered!!!
