HS Update 4.17.18: Four-way Race for GSL After Ferris Win Over Bullpups

In a dramatic slate of action on Friday, Ferris used a first half goal from Caden Martin to hand Gonzaga Prep its first league loss, creating a foursome of teams at 4-1 at the midway point of the season. Lewis & Clark rallied for a 3-1 win over North Central in another contest and down south Kamiakin finally came out on top in a close one after losing all six previous games that were decided by one goal. There was also plenty of excitement in Hanford, where a two-goal Bomber lead was not enough against Kennewick.

Greater Spokane League

North Central 1-3 Lewis & Clark

In a closely-fought, back-and-forth affair that was moved to Albi North Central grabbed an early advantage just seven minutes in when a lengthy shot from Aidan Chaparro took a fortunate deflection, sending the ball out of the reach of John Zylak. The Tigers bounced back, though, to take the lead before the break. Bryan Maxwell found some open space on the second chance off a corner and put it away in the 18th and then Jared Mehaffey put them in front in the 27th on a penalty. Mehaffey would go on to deliver a cross in the 53rd that Bailey Rosenau nodded home for some insurance.

Shootout Result: 3-4

While tied in the table at 4-1, Central Valley holds an edge among the top four with 13 points thanks to the one point for the shootout loss to Gonzaga Prep. The Bears also have what is arguable the easiest schedule remaining with Rogers, NC, Ferris and Shadle Park to close things out. LC and Ferris are second at 12 points and Prep rounds it out at 11. An outlier at the moment at nine points, University could also be a big factor in how things finish up. After playing Shadle Park Wednesday, they face three of the leaders with games against LC, G-Prep and Ferris.

In the 3A race North Central has a firm five-point command on the top spot. They face a pair of tough opponents this week with Ferris and CV, but Mt Spokane also has LC and G-Prep to contend with. The two face the bottom of the league a week from Wednesday before squaring off on the final league game day.

Mid-Columbia Conference

After seeing Pasco rebound from its first defeat with a resounding win Thursday in a battle for first against Richland in which four different players scored for the Bulldogs, the MCC had a thrilling night.

Kamiakin exorcised whatever demons were tormenting them this season and finally won a one-goal contest. In their previous nine games they saw six games decided by just one goal, four of them in overtime. Friday's home contest was a back-and-forth thriller in which they led twice only to see Walla Walla tie it up in the 40th minute and finally go in front six minutes into the second half. Miguel Vargas, though, was the hero with an equalizer in the 70th and the game-winner three minutes from time.

Hanford, meanwhile, held a two-goal lead at home Friday only to see 3A juggernaut Kennewick roar back. Abrah Romero put the Lions on the board and then Eddie Castillo scored twice, finding the back of the net on a free kick for the game-winner. In Friday's other contest Brad Nicholaus scored twice for the Riverhawks as Chiawana cruised to a 4-1 win against Southridge.

Great Northern League / Northeast A League

In a rescheduled GNL contest Friday Pullman continued its dominance in the league with a 3-1 win over second-place Clarkston with Sam Tingstad scoring his fifth of the season. They moved to 7-1 in the table with another 3-1 win the next day at West Valley to move three wins clear in the table of Clarkston and East Valley, which won 2-1 at Cheney with a pair of goals from Deiby Bernardez goals.

In a showdown of the top two in the NEA on Saturday Lakeside showed that it is without question the class of the league this season with a comfortable 5-0 win against Medical Lake, which they defeated 3-1 on the road early in the season. The result marked the first time the Cardinals had been shutout and the five-goal tally equalled what Medical Lake had allowed through its first six games.

Meanwhile, B school Northwest Christian picked up its first win of the season in a thrilling 4-3 overtime result. After leading by two at Newport they saw the Grizzlies score three consecutive to go in front. They would score an equalizer and with two minutes left in extra time Brayden Tucker hit for the winner.

Note: The leagues are combined solely to simplify everything into one list instead of four and not for league-to-league comparison due to varying games played and quality of competition. PARENTS... note that several games and details are missing (particularly in GNL/NEA/MCC). I do my best to request from coaches, but often without reply.
