HS Update 5.02.18: Colville, Newport Win District Openers


In a light day of playoff action Tuesday Colville and Newport both avoided upsets with victories in the opening round of the Northeast A League playoffs.



Northeast A League Playoffs 

Riverside 0-3 Colville
Colville made it a three-game sweep of the Rams this season, but the match was scoreless until the second half. Jessie Sarber pushed the game out of reach and Andrew Sanchez recorded the shutout. They advance to face Medical Lake in the district semifinals Thursday. The Cardinals shutout Colville in both meetings 3-0 and 2-0 with the second coming just a week ago.

Deer Park 1-4 Newport 
After splitting the season series with a 2-0 win and a 2-1 loss, which came last week, the Grizzlies left no doubt with a pair of goals in the first half to claim control. David Rodriguez, who set up the second, tallied the third goal early in the second half and would finish with two goals. Kade Zorica set up three. Newport will now face the juggernaut Lakeside, which finished as the only team in eastern Washington's four leagues to go undefeated in league play (12-0). The Eagles dominated the league with a recent 2-1 win against Colville the only one-goal decision. They blanked Newport 7-0 and 2-0 in their two meetings.

Great Northern League (& CWAC) Playoffs 

The GNL playoffs begin Thursday, but there was a pair of games in the CWAC, which two GNL sides will advance to play in crossover matches for state berths.
