HS Update 5.09.18: Kennewick Claims 3A Regional Title

The dominant Kennewick Lions proved why they were among the league leaders in all of the MCC, rolling to a 3-0 win Tuesday night in the 3A regional final against GSL's top 3A seed North Central. Meanwhile, Gonzaga Prep and Ferris were knocked out in the 4A tourney, leaving Lewis & Clark as the lone GSL side remaining. Elsewhere, Pullman won late to clinch a state berth.

3A GSL & MCC PLAYOFFS

Rogers 2-1 OT Mt Spokane [elimination match]
The Pirates this year just won't go away. In a bit of a back-and-forth affair during the season the Wildcats snared a 3-2 win at home, but this time Victoire Wilondja spoiled things to keep Rogers alive in the loser's bracket. He scored his first goal of the season to put the visitors in front early. A penalty eight minutes later left the game locked in a stalemate that looked bound for penalties when he struck again in the final moments of overtime.

Shadle Park 1-4 Kamiakin [elimination match]
Aside from their scoreless draw and shootout loss to North Central, the Braves have been a dominant force in the 3A bracket, posting another three-goal win against a GSL opponent. Luke Scrimsher scored in the final minute of the first and opening minute of the second to put the contest out of reach.

Kennewick 3-0 North Central [Regional Final]
The Lions dispatched the top two GSL seeds by a combined 8-0 scoreline to rightly claim a state berth. The controlled much of the contest with their speedy brand of possession and movement. Behind much of it was Eddie Castillo, who put them on the board early and ripped an upper-corner ball in the 28th from outside the box that gave them firm command.

4A GSL & MCC PLAYOFFS

The top two in the GNL were deadlocked through halftime, but the host Pullman Greyhounds came out on top in a back-and-forth second half with Mike Larson scoring the winner two minutes from time. The victory put Pullman into the state tourney and sent Clarkston into the crossover games with the CWAC.

Top-seeded Selah saw a two-goal lead built on a goal and assist from Brandon Vallejo disappear in the second half in the district final for the CWAC as Toppenish scored twice to pull even late and grab an even later winner from Cristobal Cervantes. It was a stunning result for Selah, which had gone 8-1 in the league with a 1-0 win over Toppenish in their previous meeting that was indicative of their defensive prowess. It was the first time in official play they allowed more than two goals as their defense only allowed two in one prior game, coming into the contest with five allowed in 10 games.
