College Notebook 11.6.18: Not Quite Done Yet... It Is Tourney Time

While some programs celebrated their seniors in their final games of the year, others were looking for victories in tournaments or league play to close out their season on a positive note and earn national tournament berths. Among those were Montana and Santa Clara. The Grizzlies finished off an impressive upset run in the Big Sky Conference to claim the league title and Santa Clara posted seven goals in their finale. Both are headed to the tournament along with Washington State and several other sides with ties to the Inland Northwest.

Here's a recap of the weekend's action and the tournament brackets announced on Monday.

## Women's Scores & Notes ##

Pac-12 & West Coast Conferences

WCC - Portland 0-1 Gonzaga :: Playing in an attacking role on the night, Jodi Ulkekul took the ball into the left corner and battled with a defender to find some space and deliver a ball into the area that India Jencks knocked on frame, deflecting off the keeper and bouncing over the line in the 54th minute for what proved to be the deciding goal. It proved to be historic as the victory was the first-ever for the Bulldogs against Portland with their only draw in 26 previous meetings coming in 2012. Their 5-2-2 record was good for fourth in the conference for the Zags, who were predicted in the preseason poll by the league's coaches to finish eighth. It's their best finish since they were third at 3-1-2 in 2005. The Zags two losses in league play came against Santa Clara and champion BYU, both of whom will keep playing in the NCAA tournament. Gonzaga also posted a win this season, 1-0, against tourney-bound Seattle University.

WCC - Pacific 0-7 Santa Clara :: Perhaps wanting to make a statement ahead of the selection committee met, the Broncos smashed the Tigers to close out the season. Maria Sanchez (American Falls, ID) registered a four assists on the night, three of them in the first half. It was the second time she tied the program record. The four helpers also tied a single-season program mark at 14 for the season. Also getting on the board was Kelsey Turnbow (Spokane, WA) with the second goal of the game.

Standings:  PAC-12   WCC

Big Sky Conference - TOURNAMENT (Ogden, Utah)

Championship: Montana 1-0 Northern Colorado :: Alexa Coyle (Bozeman, MT) scored her second goal of the tournament in the 58th minute to break the deadlock Sunday afternoon. It was redemption for her as a strike in the 17th minute of the contest went off the crossbar. McKenzie Warren and Janessa Fowler were key on the play as Warren got the ball on the right and with Fowler attracting two of the three defenders played a ball out of midfield over the back line, dropping it in no man's land about 15 yards from goal with Warren running past her defender to chase it down, knocking the bouncing ball past the keeper, who had hesitated on the play and left herself vulnerable in the middle of the box. The defense would finish the tournament with a perfectly clean slate with Claire Howard needing to make just two saves for her third tourney shutout.

Montana only allowed just seven goals this season against Big Sky opposition in 12 combined season and tournament games. Northern Colorado and Weber State were the only sides to score twice in a pair of 2-1 losses that the Griz avenged with shutout wins in the final four of the tournament.

Saturday - Puget Sound 1-0 Pacific Lutheran :: Luke Murdock (Boise, ID) scored the lone goal for the Loggers 17 minutes in to spoil the Lutes' attempt to claim the league title outright instead of sharing with Whitman, but PLU still earned the NCAA DIII berth based on tiebreakers.
